Second friend just died racing his sport bike on the highway.

submitted by Not_a_redfugee to whatever 2.4 yearsJan 20, 2023 10:19:54 ago (+12/-0)     (whatever)

I always told him to be super fuckin careful cuz i already had 1 other friend die doing stupid shit. Fuck, man. He was a good German guy. RIP.

Don't race on public roads people.

This is why I havent ridden my R6 in years and now mainly just ride my dual sport bike and go offroad and stuff. I swear people have gotten worse at driving thanks to the vax.

I still ride my 636 all the time. Luckily I have plenty of disused mountain and forest roads nearby. Fuck highways.

A dualsport is pretty high on my want list, but I can't find one that has the right performance/maintenance interval ratio for me. Price is a bit concerning as well; damn things seemed to have tripled in price from when I was last interested in dirt bikes.

Get a DR-Z 400. I fuckin love mine.

Goes back to the ratio. Those are very low maintenance, but lower compression bikes. They're ancient tech, but that doesn't really matter. I remember when teams Green and Yellow first partnered up and made identical bikes. Of course the KLX-400 is long gone but the Suzi is still being made identical to how it was twenty years ago.

I'd like something closer to the MX spectrum, yet less maintenance intensive. I loved my old '03 CRF-450R, but it was a needy bitch and not street legal. The Beta 500RR looks awesome, but too maintenance intensive.... there's just no perfect bike!!!

I do keep looking at the DRZ, though. Probably is the best compromise, and they're still very affordable. Thought about the 650 class, but they're all heavy dogs.

Stock DR-Z goes about 70mph 5th gear redline. I put the biggest front sprocket I could possibly fit on it, and a couple teeth lower on the rear sprocket. Mine will do 70 mph constantly no problem and pass up to 90mph, which is fast on a dirt bike, and I also take it offroading, hill climbing, with the same gearing with no problem. Tops out at like 90mph now. Plenty fast for a street legal dirt bike. Can hold highway speeds just fine. Over 12 inches of suspension travel, suspension is great for keeping the tires on the ground on rocky trails at higher speeds, but bottoms sort of easily on big jumps. Simple suspension tuning would transform it into an even better trail machine. The 400cc is plenty of power, especially with a bigger hole cute in the airbox and with aftermarket exhaust and bigger carb jetting. Wakes it the fuck up.

Overall just a goddamn great bike to trail ride and take backroads on, and also, if you put sand paddles on it, rides like an old school cadillac on the dunes and takes jumps well.
Getcha one. You won't regret it.

Thanks for your list of mods, I'll probably pull the trigger on one sometime this year.

You should've told him to take his bike to a race track. It might've given him an outlet for his need for speed.

When I had my Thundercat back in the day, it was an unseasonably warm February day so I took the bike to work. On my way home, enjoying the warmth, I found myself going 110 in a 55 with berries, cherries and a spot light on me. Luckily he didn't get me on radar but asked me how fast I was going and I just stared at him. $200 and 4 points for "unreasonable and imprudent speed". I went to court and there were 5 other riders with the same ticket from the same day.

3000+ die daily from vehicle collisions.

Welp. I'm not one of them.

Years ago I got pulled over doing somewhere in the neighborhood of 155. Fortunately I lived in a small town and that cop was a dude I helped with homework in highschool. He let me go, and it was neither the first nor last. Nearly every weekend when they did DUI checkpoints, he'd let me go for riding that same bike without a motorcycle endorsement ("hey guys, I'll get this one"). Eventually did get that, but whatever. Good times.

After watching hundreds of cyclists die, and often end up in multiple pieces, I've become less sympathetic to the high risk takers.

Go to Google News, type in "motorcyclist".
https://news.google.com/search?q=motorcyclist
The word DIES or KILLED is in every news article about a motorcyclist.
Fucking plain as day.
I have had my endorsement for a million years.

I did a 48 foot flight off a bike in '71. Good thing I was still a flexible kid.

[ - ] Thought_Criminal 1 point 2.4 yearsJan 20, 2023 19:05:22 ago (+1/-0)

I worked with a guy that wrecked his bike, put into a coma, then had no memory of anything or anyone from the first 30 years of his life.

[ - ] Sector7 0 points 2.4 yearsJan 21, 2023 15:34:47 ago (+0/-0)

That would be a weird reset.

For his wife and daughter too.

Wow. Did they stay married?

I don't recall for sure.

Who knew motorcycle riding is dangerous

[ - ] anothergoatinthewall 0 points 2.4 yearsJan 20, 2023 20:39:26 ago (+0/-0)

Lost a family member who slipped in the shower and hit her head... more of my family have died while showering than while motorcycling.

[ - ] bonghits4jeebus 0 points 2.4 yearsJan 20, 2023 20:45:04 ago (+0/-0)

The plural of anecdote is not data. If you were 90 years old riding a motorcycle that would be even more dangerous.

[ - ] PotatoWhisperer2 3 points 2.4 yearsJan 20, 2023 14:00:16 ago (+3/-0)

Sports bike? Was he young? Wears his gear? Takes his racing to the track not the road? Had any training? Regular training?

There's a checklist for people to determine the risks to riding. This is why you need to look through it and determine if you need to get more safe.

Don't race on public roads people.

Indeed.

[ - ] JoggerLogger 1 point 2.4 yearsJan 20, 2023 12:49:23 ago (+4/-3)

look out for bikers bumper stickers annoy the fuck out of me. if you are dumb enough to sit on a piece of metal around other pieces of metal at high speeds, and don’t see the inherent risks in it, oh fucking well.

[ - ] con77 1 point 2.4 yearsJan 20, 2023 14:56:35 ago (+1/-0)

Says the guy that drives with his brights on and turns left in front of oncoming traffic

[ - ] JoggerLogger 1 point 2.4 yearsJan 20, 2023 16:25:20 ago (+1/-0)

that would imply a lack of situational awareness.

[ - ] Thought_Criminal 1 point 2.4 yearsJan 20, 2023 11:07:12 ago (+1/-0)

People are not inherently good. Don't ride on public roads at all.

[ - ] diggernicks 9 points 2.4 yearsJan 20, 2023 11:39:57 ago (+9/-0)

People are inherently retarded

Gen z and millenials view driving as a distraction from playing with their phones

[ - ] HelpAcct123 2 points 2.4 yearsJan 20, 2023 17:55:38 ago (+2/-0)

I see in cab video of tractor trailer drivers doing this ALL OF THE TIME. Dont drive near these things. Get well ahead or stay behind.

Sorry for your loss, bro. That really sucks. If it's any consolation, he died doing something he loved. We should all be so lucky.

I definitely think you're right about people driving like fucking retards since the vax.

[ - ] Monica 6 points 2.4 yearsJan 20, 2023 10:25:13 ago (+6/-0)

Was he vaccinated? It could've been worse.
