Have a look in to the history of the space shuttle rocket engines. Go way back to the Apollo program and see what the Russians were doing then. Russia has a very different take on technology than we do and in some areas, they are far more advanced.

Not saying they're specifically more advanced in this area, but you should check out some of what tech they've developed. The rocket engine thing is just one example. We owe them a lot.
