Your humble Wi-Fi router(opens in new tab) signal could be used to track your movements around a room, bat style, a new report has claimed.

Researchers from Carnegie Mellon University recently published a report in which they detailed an experiment using ordinary off-the-shelf Wi-Fi routers to detect people’s locations, as well as their poses, in a room.

Kudos for being hardwired.

Do you have an analog meter or a smart meter?

Do you have an analog meter or a smart meter?

Do you have a choice?

Believe it or not, you do. It's likely they'll purposely make it a difficult process, but you can certainly opt out:

Unfortunately it doesn't appear I do. There was a bill in the state senate to mandate opt-outs for every utility company, but it never went anywhere. And my local co-op has no mention of opting out anywhere (other companies in other parts of the state make it easily available). Just an FAQ on how gee-whiz awesome the "smart" meters supposedly are and how "we totally take security seriously."

I would love to do this but I have a multi split-level representing different build phases starting in the 70s. Do you know of any references for how to do this properly so that can evaluate how viable it would be in my situation?

All depends on your layout and wall type, really. If it's drywall and studs, that's gonna be a lot easier than lath & plaster.

Only thing I can say for sure is avoid the electrical cabling as much as possible. Even if you're running shielded, it's best to keep some distance when running parallel just in case. If you're going to be right next to electrical cabling, make it a perpendicular crossing. Both of these will minimize EMI introduction, which can induce a current in the cabling that can cause signal degradation.

If you have an open ceiling (or even a drop ceiling) in the lowest level, you can just put the switch down there, run the cables to underneath the upper rooms, and go through the footer into the wall from there. Just don't use staples, as those can damage the cabling. Plastic clips that screw into the wood are better than nothing, but ideally you can get some J-hooks or even actual cable trays put in to support the cabling.

The other alternative is to drop down from the attic and you can lay the cables across however is convenient (assuming no critter problems up there). Then to get to the lower levels you can match up with the wall in the room upstairs. Just get a nice long flex bit and go down into the footer from the upstairs box straight into the wall below. Then you can just run both cables down the same hole in the attic.

Just make sure you keep each run of cable under 300 feet. Max spec for Ethernet is 328, but that includes cable length from the jack to a device, or from a patch panel to the switch. You CAN just do a straight run from a device to a switch, but if you use jacks and patch panels, you get more flexibility with where devices get located.

Finally, if you're doing it yourself you're not gonna be visited by the code enforcement gremlins, but it's still a good idea to keep to code. My rule of thumb is if it's going out of sight, always use plenum-rated cable for it's better fire resistance. It's stiffer and more expensive, but you get more peace of mind. Then you can use whatever riser cable is cheapest for going between the jacks and devices.

i heard about this around 2005 or so. They also have a way to recreate an entire room or house using wifi signals. Bouncing them around.

Take a look:

They have been using this technology for quite some time now. They also use infra-red tech to look thru walls. You can thwart it with a flyback driver.

[ - ] 3Whuurs 2 points 2.4 yearsJan 20, 2023 01:28:05 ago (+2/-0)

Just did a quick search on what a Flyback Driver is. How would that thwart infrared scanning?

[ - ] Centaurus 0 points 2.4 yearsJan 20, 2023 17:12:35 ago (+0/-0)

It produces scatter waves which will block anyone spying on you using wifi/cell tower wave technology to see thru your walls. They get an image based on the wifi and cell tower waves bouncing off every surface in your living space. The flyback driver will produce scatter waves which will white out the area around the driver. The more amps, the bigger the white-out field. They are a bit dangerous, though, and you have to build it yourself. Now that you have asked about infra, I am not sure if it would work. I will have to keep it in mind for further research. If you find out whether it works or not, let me know and I will do the same.

When I saw Morgan Freeman do that shit in Batman I could tell it was feasible, and probably already in the wild.

Like how at the end of enemy of the state with will Smith in the 90s was that government was listening to the phone calls. Wonder what "future tech" they are showing in the open right now through media

[ - ] ghetto_shitlord 2 points 2.4 yearsJan 19, 2023 20:28:32 ago (+2/-0)

I'm not that important to worry about this.

[ - ] Centaurus 3 points 2.4 yearsJan 19, 2023 20:37:44 ago (+3/-0)

You assume they only go after richer or more powerful people than you. You are naive. Here's a pro tip: neighborhood watch groups and those in the "citizens on patrol" are gangstalkers and government funded terrorists. They prey on the "not so rich" and "not so powerful" people who get put on one of their lists -- for instance, the unconstitutional "terrorist watch list".

[ - ] PotatoWhisperer2 2 points 2.4 yearsJan 19, 2023 23:22:52 ago (+2/-0)

Or that they don't simply use it to get the layout of your home for when they invade to take your guns/women/children/life.

[ - ] ghetto_shitlord 0 points 2.4 yearsJan 20, 2023 05:36:16 ago (+0/-0)

My home is wherever the anchor is, so good luck to "them." I have no guns, wife, or kids. Sounds like a massive headache.

So your answer to someone going out of their way to surveil you, is that you’re not worth surveilling?

This is not at all new, but AI rendering the images is news to me.

With the introduction of 5G towers onto every street corner of Industrial Society, I wonder if this tech is really closing in faster than we realize.

[ - ] uvulectomy 1 point 2.4 yearsJan 20, 2023 13:16:49 ago (+1/-0)

5G doesn't penetrate as well because the frequencies are way higher. They're attenuated faster in open air (i.e. shorter range), and REALLY fast by solid objects. That's why the towers are everywhere. They need more of them to get the same coverage. In some areas that could mean multiple base stations per building.

Where that comes into play from a privacy standpoint is from a location tracking perspective. They need a warrant to access your GPS and get your location from your phone. But with 5G base stations everywhere, they get location data that's almost as good, and all they have to do is ask the provider nicely.

If you're in a densely populated urban area, they might be able to find out not only what building you're in, but what floor you're on as well.

This is why I get so annoyed with the "muh 5G nanobot vaxxine cancer beams" idiots. It's a discredit-by-association tactic designed to hide the very real privacy concerns surrounding 5G and how it allows for much more invasive surveillance by doing an end-run around laws designed to prevent such things.

they are going to use it for EVERYTHING

[ - ] SilentByAssociation 0 points 2.4 yearsJan 20, 2023 08:47:29 ago (+0/-0)

It will have an application in every industry and sector. Each week I learn about how AI is introduced into another field of study.

[ - ] 3Whuurs 0 points 2.4 yearsJan 20, 2023 01:34:41 ago (+0/-0)

I remember hearing at least 10 years ago that smart TVs could do this with the screen.

[ - ] autotic 0 points 2.4 yearsJan 20, 2023 07:50:39 ago (+0/-0)

The roots of TEMPEST monitoring go back to WWII.

I think screen tech -- now that CRT is gone -- might make some it harder but for WiFi, BT, and other new RF sources.

[ - ] PearofAnguishJuniorManager 0 points 2.4 yearsJan 20, 2023 01:25:16 ago (+0/-0)

Not my shitbox. It can barely excrete a detectable signal.

[ - ] ruck_feddit 0 points 2.4 yearsJan 19, 2023 22:24:40 ago (+0/-0)

Can they determine whether I'm taking a dump or standing on the toilet to change a clock battery? It's important.

[ - ] Prairie 0 points 2.4 yearsJan 19, 2023 20:36:00 ago (+0/-0)

In some instances, the images came back incomplete, or showed people in weird, unnatural poses, demonstrating that the method obviously still needs work. But in many cases, the images created by the AI were quite accurate. People’s positions within a room were accurate, their dimensions were accurate, their poses were accurate.

Ohhhh, AI, so it's basically getting very little information and the AI is making it seem like it can see your body, except when it shows crazy poses. Of course the body dimensions will seem correct because the AI is fabricating that.

[ - ] Prairie 0 points 2.4 yearsJan 19, 2023 20:34:15 ago (+0/-0)

In layman’s terms, the Wi-Fi signal transmitted by the routers can be used as a sort of sonar, where an AI-powered program analyzes the difference in the density between outgoing and incoming signals, and comes back with wireframe images of people in the room.

A sort of sonar, actual radar.

[ - ] PotatoWhisperer2 1 point 2.4 yearsJan 19, 2023 23:22:07 ago (+1/-0)

Well, considering that wifi is just a radio wave on a certain freq, yeah, it's radar.
