It was never open sourced. To open source it would require a lot of work because it's a confusing mess with commented out code and other hackyness. I've become a better coder since and rewritting the code has crossed my mind. But I'm busy with other stuff and there is no incentive, especially since growth has stagnated. If someone wants to fund it I could find some time to make it happen.
Understood. I would suggest dropping it onto GitHub as-is (warts and all). I wouldn't judge, as I'm a bad hack, but at least people could provide suggestions and we all could have opportunities to learn and/or contribute.
There should be a way to make it private / password only. If so, place the password as a stickied post on some related sub...one has to dig and be a goat to look / fuck around.

I just posted one in a comment and it showed up. I had to post it to catbox first... so really it was a catbox link. It was centered though and looked out of place but it worked. You do have to click the link for it it show up though.
Not to mention that it would be documenting every security flaw you haven't thought about. When reddit open sourced their code they ran something different in production to cover up security flaws without open sourcing the exact patches. Then eventually they stopped updating the open source version because why waste time updating something that your real code isn't connected to that only presents a security risk and will help your competitors.
Don't open source stuff because people pressure you to. I use a lot of open source but there is something a lot of open source minded folks need to learn. What people put into open source is a gift. No one needs to put their code in open source. What people choose to put in open source you should be grateful for and leave it at that. Most people who code do a mixture of both. What gets open sourced and what doesn't isn't your business, but theirs. If you respect creators you are more likely to get more code.
Don't use that repo if you want to set up another Voat clone. It is seriously outdated, I've reviewed it. Wouldn't be a wise choice. Better to use Lemmy.
