LAWRZ Microsoft Edge

submitted by GrayDragon to whatever 1.3 yearsJan 17, 2023 06:26:25 ago (+24/-2)     (whatever)

A shortcut to Microsoft Edge just magically appeared on my completely 100% empty desktop a few seconds ago. There was no update that I noticed. Slimy fucks.

I need Windowz for my job, so no, I will not reformat. I should just start using my Linux partition again.

Even better, "Edge" is now just rebadged Google Chrome.

Google and Microsoft embedded in your OS as native built in backdoor & spyware. What swell companies.

Well it sends your data to Microsoft instead of google

[ - ] virge 0 points 1.3 yearsJan 17, 2023 16:34:40 ago (+0/-0)

I think you mean both.

[ - ] bonghits4jeebus 0 points 1.3 yearsJan 17, 2023 16:39:38 ago (+0/-0)

I guess. I thought Microsoft's ploy was to take your personal information for themselves and sell it competing with Google. That Google developed chrome in a way that let them do this is lol.

I was actually thinking the other day what must the conversations about Edge have looked like within MS? Sure, it is based on open source, but Google is their competitor. Maybe for one company to develop a render engine just for themselves is not practical any more.

The market for browsers is pretty much settled and it really does make sense to rebadge an existing one rather than create yet another standard. As someone who has previously had to program websites to work on a broad swath of competing browsers without the benefit of libraries that abstract the differences away I'm pleased MS gave up.

Yeah I used to deal with Internet Explorer, too, in my previous life as a web developer. It didn't last long.

[ - ] virge 0 points 1.3 yearsJan 17, 2023 17:12:08 ago (+0/-0)

but Google is their competitor

I challenge this assumption.

I've never thought to try it myself yet, but what about running VirtualBox on Linux to access a Windows desktop when needed? https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads

That is not a bad idea to look into. Thanks!

This is the way. Even better some MicroSloth garbage runs perfectly in wine.

[ - ] uvulectomy 1 point 1.3 yearsJan 17, 2023 17:00:53 ago (+1/-0)

Sadly Adobe Audition (yeah, yeah, I know) isn't one of those. Seems to work just fine in a Windows VM though.

Might also be worth giving one of these super stripped-down installs a try:

Interesting. Dislike of Microsoft's kind of bullshit led me to Linux.

Sell everything and move into a cave. It's the only way to avoid The Beast. Soon they will be reading your thoughts and broadcasting ads directly into your brain via 5G. Caves block almost all parts of the electromagnetic spectrum. Underwater works even better, but is far more difficult to achieve.

You sure you didn't get blackout drunk and decide to run Windows update for the lolz?

[ - ] GrayDragon [op] 1 point 1.3 yearsJan 17, 2023 13:12:21 ago (+1/-0)

Haha, no. I was drunk, but not even remotely blackout level. While I was on Voat (using Brave), a shortcut icon just appeared out of nowhere. Since I have absolutely nothing on my desktop, it was rather obvious. I immediately made this post in my fuel-raged, drunken anger!

I just checked Windows update history. Usually updates make a request. Apparently something called "Definition Updates" for MS Defender do not make a request and just happen seemingly daily.

Thanks! I recall hearing of this before, but I will still have to research this a bit before I download it.

You just found out that Microsoft is slimy?

[ - ] Leveraction 1 point 1.3 yearsJan 17, 2023 11:33:12 ago (+2/-1)

Did you miss the point captain genius?

[ - ] voatersaredumbasses 3 points 1.3 yearsJan 17, 2023 06:45:10 ago (+3/-0)

I haven't used Windows on my home PC since Win95. I haven't used it on my work PC since Win2k.

[ - ] MrPancake 2 points 1.3 yearsJan 17, 2023 11:15:19 ago (+2/-0)

A small windows update pushed night before last. But yeah; fuck M$. On the bright side; you can now get Edge on LINUX!!! lolz

[ - ] chrimony 2 points 1.3 yearsJan 17, 2023 09:48:51 ago (+2/-0)

There was no update that I noticed.

Check the Windows Event Log or go to the Windows Update settings and look for a history of updates.

[ - ] GrayDragon [op] 0 points 1.3 yearsJan 17, 2023 13:16:17 ago (+0/-0)

Yeah, MS Defender definition updates apparently occur daily. The last significant Windows update for me was on 01/11/23. A definition update that is doing non-virus activity annoys me further.

[ - ] chrimony 0 points 1.3 yearsJan 17, 2023 13:25:32 ago (+0/-0)

Does the timestamp on the desktop link match when the definition update occurred?

[ - ] Kozel 1 point 1.3 yearsJan 17, 2023 16:46:42 ago (+1/-0)

strange, im on windows and I dont have edge installed

I'd chalk this up to the user being a retard

for that matter the only (((chrome))) browser I have is a barebones ungoogled chromium that I have to use use for shitty websites once every few months

I really don't miss that shit.

[ - ] SilentByAssociation 1 point 1.3 yearsJan 17, 2023 11:36:35 ago (+1/-0)

I only use Edge as a PDF viewer.

[ - ] MuricaPersonified 0 points 1.3 yearsJan 17, 2023 13:33:20 ago (+0/-0)

Those and shitty government websites.

[ - ] bonghits4jeebus 1 point 1.3 yearsJan 17, 2023 16:34:57 ago (+1/-0)

Government websites are so hit and miss, even within the same state. Like, they can't hire the guy who did a good job on the voter registration site to do the vehicle registration site.

[ - ] 9000timesempty 1 point 1.3 yearsJan 17, 2023 09:46:32 ago (+2/-1)

Slimy? If you know why it's being done then you wouldn't think slimy.
