It's always better to discuss scripture for scripture than to just come out of the gate assuming a concept was entirely made up. Greek Orthodox has a parallel concept with theosis which is similar to the Western church concept of sanctification.

When you put all of these pieces into perspective, you can see the LDS perspective on becoming gods is probably more appropriately understood in a Western context as sanctification rather than some implied concept of becoming some almighty power separate from God (which is clearly not what the LDS message appears to be).

I think there are worthwhile criticisms of LDS, but this whole 'gods' point is not one of them.
