The conquest was more about ending the Canaanites' religious and cultural practices than ending their lives. The problem wasn't the people, but idolatry.

I love all those parts that justify killing for all sorts of wacky reasons. Leviticus has lots of good ones. I always forget about Numbers, though. I think I was rather bored by the time I got to that book all those decades ago when I decided to read the whole Bible just to be cooler than everybody else, or something. Really, I did just wanted to read it... and it was awesome aside from all the really boring parts.
