Pretty sure this guy lives in my area. Homie is straight up building a fucking fully functional guillotine.

As you can see already, he's either going to have to reinforce the bottom of the frame to take multiple impacts without breaking, or, more blade and a shorter rope to brake the fall of the blade shuttle before impact. 11mm nylon rope has about a 1/3 stretch factor. I would suggest the addition of shock absorbers at the bottom. Maybe do all three.

Good start though. He already has shown he has the will, and that's the hard part. Experience and further testing will eventually get him where he wants to go. "Failing faster" is a good way to accelerate any development project.

Many people don't realize that the guillotine remained France’s official state method of capital punishment as late as 1981, and was last used on convicted murderer Hamida Djandoubi in 1977.

One of the things that I find most interesting is that Germany adopted the guillotine as their sole legal method of official state execution between 1933 and 1945, and used it to execute 16,500 prisoners – 10,000 of them in 1944 and 1945 alone. If you wanted to legally execute somebody in Germany, it was with the guillotine, or not at all.

Now here's the thing:
If the only official and legal method of state execution by the German government between 1933 and 1945 was by guillotine, and no other method was legally allowed, and we know what sticklers the Germans have always been for following the rules, then why didn't all of the "death camps" have guillotines? All of those camps. All of those so-called quote unquote "executions". Not one guillotine. Hmmm...

The guillotine was last used in West Germany in 1949 in the execution of Richard Schuhand was last used in East Germany in 1966 in the execution of Horst Fischer.

A little time, foresight, and a quality hardware store is all a guy really needs.

You forgot motivation. If he does live around here, I can totally understand his motivation.

Honestly, at that speed, I think the pain is nominal.

Guy's a wee bit dramatic, but he seems to speak the truth.

Neat video, kinda silly, kinda serious, gets a certain message across. I like it.

I've been giving this a lot of thought and I believe it is time to update the guillotine! It's time for a modern version!

[ - ] bobdole9 3 points 1.3 yearsJan 11, 2023 08:57:06 ago (+3/-0)

What sort of modern improvements would you have?

I'd like to see springs pull the blade down...more force than just gravity. Makes things "more humane" or some shit like that.

[ - ] anrach 3 points 1.3 yearsJan 11, 2023 09:32:13 ago (+3/-0)

Pneumatic pistons? (could be used for quick reset as well)
Modern low-friction materials/coatings for the runners & blade?

[ - ] Peleg 2 points 1.3 yearsJan 11, 2023 16:25:26 ago (+2/-0)

Yeah. I was thinking along those lines.
We've got a lot to do also so we may need a line like the way they do chickens. Hang them upside down by their feet and run them through a set of blades.
Plop Plop Plop!

I showed this to my wife the other day.

[ - ] prototype 4 points 1.3 yearsJan 11, 2023 06:15:43 ago (+4/-0)

"I showed this to my wife"

Was it meant to encourage her, or threaten her?

[ - ] Ozark 4 points 1.3 yearsJan 11, 2023 06:45:32 ago (+4/-0)

It was to show her the way.

[ - ] BulletStopper 1 point 1.3 yearsJan 11, 2023 08:58:31 ago (+1/-0)

Me too. She said, "Good."

The Guillotine is too messy and leaves vaxxed blood everywhere.

I love that guy in a non-homo way.

[ - ] Merlynn 1 point 1.3 yearsJan 11, 2023 13:54:49 ago (+1/-0)

He should make sure it's mobile. I think there's going to be a lot of call for such a thing and it's best not to pile up too many bodies in one place.

Great! Lets get some Politicians in there.

0:36: Dude, seriously? You're struggling to carry that blade up a ladder, with the sharp edge perfectly positioned to slice something off if you lose control. At least cover the blade up. Also, use a rope to haul it up.

4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.
