There used to be a fellow who came to a library that I frequented, who was always dressed like Waldo, but in blue tones. He used to take a ruler, and cross out, in ink, words in books that he thought superfluous. He did quite a number on Carl Sagan’s “Dragons of Eden.”
I began stalking him, with the intention of murdering then eating him.
Long story short, that’s how I met the love of my life.
The original machine has a base-plate of prefabulated aluminite, surmounted by a malleable logarithmic casing in such a way that the two main spurving bearings were in a direct line with the pentametric fan. The latter consisted simply of six hydrocoptic marzlevanes, so fitted to the ambifacient lunar waneshaft that side fumbling was effectively prevented. The main winding was of the normal lotus-o-delta type placed in panendermic semi-bovoid slots in the stator, every seventh conductor being connected by a non-reversible tremie pipe to the differential girdlespring on the "up" end of the grammeters.

Im not smart, i just like to read.
A time and place for everything, and all things in moderation.
The proper words or phrasing is far more effective when swaying others emotionally. Simple is best.
When I'm trying to be precise and technical I have to elaborate and use a more complex dialect to ensure the information is explained rapidly. If the person I'm speaking to can't hang then I'll slow it down to their understanding.

I have top tier iq levels
Sure. So do I. I was tested by that ridiculous group Mensa. Give me your percentile, or just another internet blowhard. Right now, you just sound like an idiot.
Theory: only English majors overcomplicate speech and choose complicated or uncommon words, to show anybody that their education wasn't a waste of time.
Using an advanced vocabulary is a way to present your social status to the person you are speaking with. Ironically, I tend to speak in very chopped and direct sentences in person because that communicates a concept better than fancy words, it is a sales technique. You might like a book called pitch anything by Oren klaff.
I don't think the issue is with "complicated" words rather than with uncommon words. English has a shit ton of synonyms or like and people trying to sounds smart will pick one that is more obscure in order to show others they know a word that most people don't. This is ineffective for communication purposes. On the other hand, you can use "complicated" words that reveal high intelligence and vocabulary but which are common enough to be recognized and at least moderately understood by most people. I don't think "recalcitrant" is a very useful word, so your example is solid. The problem isn't that it's complex, the problem is that it's an uncommon and largely unnecessary word.
It's possible I've just watched too many politicians insert strange words in order to evade questions or confuse the listener even if they're telling the truth.
If someone rapid fires a bunch of waffle at you to the point you need to stop and break out a dictionary you'll never win a debate.
