I used to run VW rail buggies back in the day and done a lot of trading for parts. Luckily we had a VW shop near me where I could order most things. This was before the internet got big and all that. a rail buggy is a lot more exciting than a side-by-side.

VW-based buggies are fun as fuck. Never drove a side-by-side, but the ones with exciting specs are exponentially more expensive than the tame ones that only look fast.

Besides, building your own buggy also builds character.

It was a lot of fun building them and keeping them up then about ten of us would go on big rides every weekend and all that. I miss those days. Side-by-sides are a lot of fun, too, but far more expensive but less maintenance and better braking systems!! lol VW is an awesome creation but those braking systems tongue monkey dick. I almost deaded a couple times because sand got into my master cylinder.

Are you referring to sand rails?

Sort of, except there isn't much sand here.

Those are always fun. Regardless of environment.

Auto parts are hard to source now for newer cars. I don't have any problems sourcing drive line parts for my 23 year old Buick Park Avenue. GM installed the 3.8L in everything from 96-2005. Interior parts are unobtainium. Counter to popular belief The government does not force the auto manufacturers to maintain part stock for 10 years. In GM's case once they decide to no longer support the model I suspect they destroy all parts for that model. They want you to buy a new car. VW's philosophy of changing little on the bug while constantly making improvements was a great system. Unfortunately consumers are more fickle than frugal.

Hence why you buy aftermarket parts from the companies that bought the equipment from the manufacturer when they moved on to a new model….
