I picked up some Russian JHP 9mm from a gunshow for $15 per 50. After initial doubts, I'm actually fairly impressed.

Second picture of expansion

I only fired one round into some jugs for an expansion test (5.2" barrel), and saved the rest (had two boxes of 50). It expanded to 1.8x its original size, and retained 100% mass. And one shot accuracy test all ended up in a single hole. Overall cartridge weight varied by about 2-3 grains, although I didn't think to measure America ammo to compare; might do that when I get home. No velocity test though. Made it into the third bottle and slightly cracked the fourth (likely hydroshock). Bottle #2 was an Arizona gallon turned sideways (back to front longside, not top/bottom)

This is probably the perfect scenario for it though with a long barrel and only plastic.

I picked it up for my shtf hording stash and was highly sceptical, not knowing if it would even work properly. Now I'm more than happy to add it to my backup pile.

The "xxx Bear" ammo comes off the same production lines as Russian military but comes in three varieties/quality levels: Brown, Silver and Gold.

Brown Bear: Steel cased crap that is only good for plinking. Will not be very accurate and you should expect some misfires. WIll rust in the box if not stored in humidity controlled environment

Silver Bear: Nickle plated cases. Mid-grade quality; generally reliable and suitable but the stockpile.

Golden Bear: The premium offering. Brass cases, tighter tolerances and better accuracy.

Steel shell casings chew up your gun.
Brass ones don't.
That's why people hate Russian rounds, and there's more reasons.

Thankfully they've moved away from corrosive primers

Corrosive primers are fine if you clean your firearm

Yes but it shouldn't ever be delayed which can be inconvenient in the field. Pain in the ass to run water through your firearm, dry it fully and then clean it.

I've never had trouble with Russian ammo. The one thing to watch out for is that it shoots dirtier than a whore in Harlem.
After about 80 rounds through the AR, the casings began to stick in the chamber due to the burnt powder residue.

Pretty ballsy buying secondhand ammo at a gun show. Good to see one fired.

Perhaps, but it's not someone's reloads or anything. Worst case scenario, it's factory ammo that's been sitting in someone's garage.

It's crap. Wait till you decide to run a magazine through it and have one that missed being properly charged stick in the barrel just to have the next one blow the pistol up in your hand.

You mean a squib? First, I've been shooting long enough to know what a squib looks and feels like. Second, I reload so I pay attention to what ammo looks and feels like. Third this is shit hit the fan ammo. I've got ~400 rounds of Hornady/Sig/Remington JHP 9mm before I reach for this stuff.

Like I said. It's for stockpile, and will be squeezed after my good jhp, and before my fmj.

LAWRZ, Russian ammo. You do see you there are holes in the front of the bullets, right?

That's a setscrew to adjust the penetration factor.
