Go with a gas generator. Diesels aren't just a pain to start in cold weather, they can also wet stack if they're not loaded to 60%. For the uninitiated, this means unburned fuel slowly builds up in the exhaust. It makes everything filthy and can eventually cause damage. It's worse in cold weather. Diesel gens often need a dummy load to keep this from happening. Alternatively you could undersize it and ensure you always load it up. Gas is just easier in cold weather. Even better is LP, which has the longest shelf life of the three and also works well in cold weather with the caveat that the tank may need heat.
