After taking a flight from Darwin in Australia's Northern Territory I was directed into a departure lounge at Sydney airport to await a connection to Brisbane, one other bloke was there a fellow about my age, size and shape, he was looking straight at me and in the spirit of traveller's bonhomie I said "hiya mate" .. he pulled a face.
I mouthed get f***** and left it at that .. he took a connecting flight to Coolangatta, whereas on the evening news that night came a story George Harrison had flown into that place, on his way to Murwillumbah in Northern NSW to attend a Hare Krishna festival, they showed footage and I recognized him as the dude who had been rude at Sydney airport.
If it is any consolation to anyone celebs are said to be equally offensive toward each other .. in Sydney another time there was a dude carrying a guitar case prancing up the street in his elevator shoes, just from the way he looked I knew he was a top line player.
He was coming up the other side of the street, when the lights changed I crossed over and was virtually face to face with Albert Lee who was Eric C's rhythm man for a substantial time, he scowled at me .. both incidents put me off of celebrities for good.
Well put yourself in his shoes. Basically since he was 18 his entire public life has consisted of getting harassed. So when someone says “hiya mate” the first thing he thinks is “fuck this guy is going to ask stupid fucking questions about being a Beatle and any chance at peace in this situation is over.”
As for Albert Lee that guy is clearly just fucking weird and doesn’t really like people all that much.
My most related experience is with Arnold Schwarzenegger. I've never thought much of celebrities and really want to treat all people the same. When you are in there presence they are even more just a person.
So I happen to be in a political conversation with a large group of people and him (back when I was more "in the party") and he's sharing his ideas for how he wants to change districting in my state, and I'm listening to his ideas and they've got me thinking and perplexed enough that I'm no longer thinking of him as Arnold Schwarzenegger but instead as just some idiot. I'm a real nobody in this situation but I guess my autism took over and I had to say something because his ideas are dumb, complicated, magnets for corruption, and every advantage is easy to get in other ways (basically my state was turning purple and he had his scheme for how to make things more favorable when things are properly blue. Sounds like a good idea but its the details were out there). So I asked him a question that basically implied he's an idiot and it kind of hit. Basically.. why don't we do this simpler. He didn't really have a response at all and it took the wind right out of his sails. (Kind of his fault for not having a response to kind of an obvious question).
But it's weird. I see him on the tv or he comes up in conversation at work when people talk about actors and I have to think, oh yeah, I met him once, called him an idiot, that was a weird moment. It's just strange to think in hindsight that was actually Arnold Schwarzenegger because in the moment he wasn't Arnold Schwarzenegger, he was just an idiot with convoluted ideas.
I live in NYC, so I’ve seen probably a couple hundred celebrities in person. The only one I ever approached was Drea DeMatteo back in her Sopranos hey day because she was fucking hot.
I met him back a million years ago, when he was filming We Were Soldiers. He used our spare hangar on the airfield at Ft. Benning, about 30 feet from our main hangar, and they have it up the set for the indoor house scenes.
He seemed a cool dude but there were a lot of us, so he couldn’t talk to everyone. My buddy did get him to sign out then sign back in a torque wrench, though.
