No one is forced to use one. Actually most of them would prefer that midwives did all the basic deliveries, and they were only called if there is some special need. Medicalization is cultural, and to an extent they're just providing what women learned on TV was appropriate.

I think most people would agree with you that C-sections are overused and that rates are BS. For the vast majority of the people in the US, the rate is whatever their insurance company is willing to pay. The cash rate at the big public hospital sounded reasonable to me, for what it was. At least unlike with an acute medical problem, you have lot of notice on having a baby, so you can pick how you want it. Does the market suck? Yeah I think everyone agrees.

Can't really knock emergency medicine though. It's the difference between dying of tuberculosis like Doc Holliday, and getting through it with therapeutics. Or losing a limb due to infection. Dentistry is still barbaric though...

i will try to avoid the hospital as much as possible. i lost all trust in these institutions altogether.

self diagnosis its easy but it can also be dangerous because you might think that the jaw pain that you are feeling was because of a bad sleep or some infection when in fact it could be a sign of a heart attack.

I had heart inflammation due to food poisoning, and one of the feelings I had after a few days was a weird tingle up and down my left arm and the left underside of my jaw. Multiple EKGs came back all fucked up and troponin levels were elevated. I went from a large stand-alone ER/urgent care to a proper hospital and into the cath lab, to have a catheter inserted into an artery in my arm and squirt some stuff directly into my heart while watching live X-rays to see what was wrong.

That's just one symptom, and this was November 2019.
