Its not actually mass, that's just the high school understanding of it. The more complicated explanation is its energy+momentum relative to an inertial reference frame (inbeforewordsalad). Don't ask me why I remember that.

Yes mass is a kind of energy, this is why mass affects gravity. Think of it like energy that is mostly frozen. Light on the other hand (more precisely photons) also effects gravity even though photons are massless particles, because its not about the mass its about the ENERGY.
