Perfect way to put it. In life, upon meeting someone that you perceive to be "better" than you, in a "better" situation than you, or having something you want, there are two ways to respond:
Option 1, Stoic Approach: Seek to improve yourself/emulate that which you perceive to be better in order to achieve similar results.
Option 2, Emotional Approach: Suppress the drive for greatness and remove any influence of the thing you perceive to be better, in order to avoid feeling bad in the moment.
The first option requires mental strength, the ability to endure initial pain immediately (pain of facing your inadequacy, pain of struggling towards a goal) so that you become hardened through your improvement and no longer feel the pain.
The second option is the "easy" way, as all it requires of you is to be ignorant. It is only an illusion of avoiding pain, however, for instead of immediate pain that dissipates with training, you are thrust into a new realm of torment. One in which you are perpetually gnawed by the knowledge of your own inadequacy, no matter how far you try to run from it.
NPCs overwhelmingly fall for the 2nd option, since they are not strong individuals. They don't believe in themselves, they don't think it's possible to ascend to a higher level than that which they are at. And so, their course of action is to destroy that which holds a mirror to themselves.
I'd like to add that, while very important, it is not just your intelligence or physical strength (again, both important), it is also your spirit, which is difficult to describe. Perhaps to say, one's will.
Ancient Greeks and Romans supposedly acknowledged the mind, body, and spirit triad.
(Also be aware that there is some creepy jew / progressive crap going around called The Dark Triad recently. I am not sure exactly what it is yet, but I suspect it is in opposition to the positive triad I just stated.)
