The only standard for good is from God. Only God defines good, not what man believes is good. God never changes nor does His standards for good, unlike man who always changes his hypocritical standards.
Man’s condition is eternally against God and cannot do good on his own. There are acts that are good on the outside, but the inside is always tainted, even if by a little, by evil. Therefore the only way to do good is for it to come from God. For man to do anything good, he must be born again with God dwelling in him.
The only way to God is through His Son Jesus Christ. When you believe Him, then He will set you free.
When you go grocery shopping and take the cart out to your car to unload, do you put the cart in a stall when you’re done, or just leave it where it is?
You can't if that's how you think. If you do a good thing because you want to feel good, you're doing it for yourself. If you do a good thing because you want the other person to benefit without knowing the outcome or whether they know it was you who did it, that's the right thing to do.
You don't do it for yourself. That's the simple answer.
if no one knew what you did and could not give you credit for it, would you still do good things for the sake of it? purely for the good you know will come of it?
It's pretty easy: the next time you have an opportunity to do something good, do nothing instead. If doing nothing makes you feel anxious, craving, or compelled then your "do gooding" is just a psychological condition; you are persuing some benefit. Your actions are only genuine when they are not the result of compulsion.

Self esteem is why so many will, but until the day they die they will know they sold their integrity, or soul for that, and nothing they ever say, do or think is uncontaminated by their greed and self absorption.
You aren't good because nobody is good. What we like and benefit from is practical people who pick up the McDonalds wrapper off the sidewalk because they have integrity and don't think they did something good. Just practical.
