Just had a college kid ring on my door. He was offering me a free doorbell camera, and all I had to do was let him put his company's signs up in the yard.

I don't know about y'all, but that's suspicious as fuck to me. I've never even heard of the company.

This is a relatively well establish marketing technique. A company offers to provide some service -- in this case it's a security system of a sort -- in exchange for sign placement and, hopefully, referrals to all of your neighbors. In the least they can go around and use your installation as leverage to sell more.

You would get the the bare minimum of features, of course, and would no doubt be encouraged to upgrade them in the near future.

Most security systems are sold at near cost, because it's the monitoring service that makes money. Their cost on that doorbell cam is going to be below $100 installed, so this is cheap advertising for them.
