Creed kids? I don't think very many teens were into Creed when "My Own Prison" was on every rock & metal station. Same with Godsmack. I've never met one actual person who's told me that creed or godsmack were their favorite bands. They were just mainstream radio & MTV fillers. Like they were bands that were put together by their record labels - i.e. - Session/studio musicians hired by a record company and then put in a "band" after the record company finds a good singer.
Same thing with Linkin Park.
How do I know all this?
Because with Creed, Godsmack & LP, they all came out with chart topping debut albums and started headlining their own tours shortly after their debut albums dropped and radio play.
Bands and acts that come out of nowhere and start dominating radio airplay and selling out venues within their first year are usually acts designed by record labels or PR companies.

The music was intentionally shitty, made by bands who were told not to learn how to sing well (or take care of your voice, hence why their vocals so often became fried), not to learn how to play their instruments well (or even how to maintain them in good quality, hence why their instrumentals also progressed to a degraded quality), or how to write and composed their music (hence why the songs were short, simple, repetitive, and typically revolved around some specific words/riffs/concept that the rest of the song was merely an accompaniment to), to just get out there and play and/or sing without regard to standards (hence the explosion of unlistenable noises in the 70s that made up the bulk of what was considered to be punk).

Then the bands who were simply the least shitty were the ones that became the soundtrack to the subculture, very often they werent shit becaue they broke from the "just do it" punk rock creedo and got themselves properly trained and produced.

So what did you get out of all this? The kind of sound characteristic of early punk rock.

The fashions was also intentionally terrible, they emphasized looking as shockingly different from how you'd be expected to and to acheive this look with as little money and effort invested into it as possible.

Over time the style standardized and became the punk rock look.

There were three groups drawn to punk for its ideology.

The communists liked it because it meant an escape from accountability.

The fascists liked it because it meant an escape from judgement.

The libertarians liked it because it meant an escape from authority.

Basically the ideology itself was seen as a framework that other ideologies could be built upon, depending upon how the premise was interpreted and expanded upon, it could lead to the justification of just about any political stance that lay outside the mainstream (and very christian) conservative right wing that was dominant at the time (how much energy was spent by punks trying to sneakily take the piss out of margeret thatcher?).

Basically there were no standards, and they were even seen as undesirable, as the point of punk was "authenticity" (funny that most punk bands that punks will listen to are the successful ones that sold out on this value).
