Punks are conformists. As are goths. And so are all the other subcultures. They act like they are edgy for going hard against what the mainstream culture they lived in had always been against, for pushing the narratives favored by the richest and most powerful people in the world, and only calling themselves the resistance despite it all, the extent of their rebellon is fashion and soundtrack, they look a bit unusual, listen to stuff that makes certain people uncomfortable, and overexaggerate the extent of the negative reaction they got from the few who took offense to it. Every youth subculture out there was merely an outlet for the rebellious impulses of the young, kind of like what the mainstream right is today for those kids who are now grown up or grown old. The only real rebels were the ones everybody hated, and now that their ideas are still rising up to the point of being addressed in the public consciousness, we see the fake rebels act as footsoldiers for all the large corporations they pretended to be against but never actually challenged in any meaningful way.

Agree with your post except for the goth part. The goths I dated were mostly anti-social with unconventional world views, doing everything they could to showcase their own identity without actually taking part in anything. Most of them had some degree of neuroticism and all had daddy issues.

There weren't any goth "cliques" where I grew up, either; they all seemed to hate each other. Maybe they were different where you were.
