English is a mix of old Germanic languages with French trying to be one language, with a lot of borrowed words from many other languages. This is why you have to be told how to pronounce certain words correctly because they are not pronounced how they are spelt and why they are other rules like silent letters. Some say there are more exceptions than rules in English.
There is no need to learn English. If you know Spanish the United States government and all corporations will suck your dick and provide free translators.
For instance, to go from English to Spanish is not as hard as going from Spanish to English.
The reason being is that English has as many rules as there are rule breakers. That and there are twice as many sounds that aren’t in the Spanish language. If you are going from English to Spanish you only need to learn 3 new sounds and memorize the rules.. and the few rule breakers. Not to mention that Spanish is pronounced exactly as it is read, which speeds up memorization. English pronunciation is the Wild West.
I have heard that from Europeans for whom English was only a learned language. I had always thought it would be one of the harder languages to learn due to the ridiculous number of irregular verbs and the fact letters can make completely different sounds in different words, but apparently the lack of genders and very easy conjugation make it quite simple to learn, even for people whose mother tongue is gendered.
That is true. Also the 12 tenses of English are very easy to explain if you understand them correctly. Unfortunatelly, text books do not do that. That is one of the main reasons that in my country we have english at schools, but when people finish them they do not speak it. I would estimate about 15 to 20 percent do. That would correlate with the percentage of reasonably smart people in the population.
I would argue that Danish is actually the easiest. English also benefits from having fewer conjugations on verbs compared to other languages. Guess which language has no conjugation dependent on subject. Danish.
Yo quiero Tu quieres Su quiere nos quiermos Ustedes Quieres
I want She wants They want
Jeg vil (I want) Hun vil (She wants) De vil (They want)
Took German in high school. Always did a terrible job remembering which noun is masculine, feminine, or neutral. Then add what tense you're speaking in to dial up the "correct" version of the.
English is widely used because it is full of hidden meanings. Plus, the syntax and tonality like all other modern ideas such as brutalist architecture is designed to keep you in a lower state.
English is widely spoken because the original speakers widely colonised, and their colonies tended to be economically successful which then rendered English an important language of business. French is pretty widely spoken too, as is Spanish, both due to large colonial presences in times past, but the places those languages are spoken are largely shitholes so there is little economic advantage in being able to communicate easily with many of the speakers these days.
The British colonized places that aren't shitholes are the ones where they replaced the population or more likely their decedents escaped British control for long enough to do without the crown's permission.
