But what are they made of? If plastic they will leach chemicals into the soil and in turn your crop. Potato Towers are a better idea.

Good point. I want to try the bag or tower method at least once. This method looks easy. But you know, my neighbor who runs a large organic farm said if you use straw that's been sprayed, it will damage your plants. But I have limited garden space atm so I don't want to use the whole plot just for potatoes.

Yeah you got to be careful about everything these days, but you can use leaves or any type of mulch. Also works with just dirt but the dirt top ups will need to be more frequent as some will "leak" out over time, but a surprising amount doesn't, especially as the roots grow and start to hold the soil together. Smaller holed wire would be better for a no mulch version.

i have 5 chickens now. many cities have laws against gardens in the backyard. it's another ridiculous bullshit law for control. if you're self dependent, you don't need them.

I love this idea, try to live up to this idea. Try not to fool yourself. Keep a spreadsheet this year see how many net calories toward your family's diet you are actually producing. Make sure you don't need seeds, seed potatoes, or anything should the retail/internet thing dry up.

Do you mean "make sure to allocate some plants for seed harvesting/seed potatoes"? Because otherwise you're very limited in plants that tolerate cloning/grafting.
