buddhist monks aren't what they used to be. Meditating (the natural way) has become too slow, too cumbersome. They want enlightenment, and they want it NOW!

Thailand has really strange drug laws. It's crazy to me that police are allowed to drug test citizens. Sounds like the monks were just doing the equivalent of Adderall, not that that's a good thing but they probably weren't smoking meth. I've actually worked around some Thai people that were devoutly Buddhist. They kept a shrine at work which consisted of a statue of Bhodi and a few brass bells. Everyday they would make food for the statue. It never ate the food of course, but god damn was I tempted to take a bite or two just to freak them out a little.
