My money is on the shifting magnetic poles.

Yeah, they might be walking in a big circle at the bottom of the ocean.

imagines Giant balls of crab armies rolling to a fro beneath the seas in a never ending battle for crustacean supremacy

It’s pretty easy to fabricate a lot that pretty much nobody has the ability or resources to disprove.

This is the likely answer. If 'they' don't actually count them they're officially not there.

Magnetic shifting, sub-surface seismic activity or natural geo-marine changes attributed to climate cycles all have an effect on animal marine life habits, the crabs have obviously rerouted to a different area...just watch how much that crab and prime rib dinner costs now.

It's an estimate. Whose estimate is correct is debatable. I'm pretty sure this guy's numbers are more accurate than what the NOAA wants to publish.

That was a cool article, thanks. I had no idea that this was a reoccurring problem every 30 or 40 years. This looks like standard government mismanagement.

This will be one of those things where 10 years from now they’ll finally let it slip that they banned population surveying in 3/4 of the Bering sea before declaring they’re all missing.
