This is pretty tame compared to what my travelling friends have experienced in the third world. One guy was literally harassed sexually by men in Egypt and offered money to engage in sodomy because he has very White skin and they go crazy for it.

I had a great experience in Morocco about 4 years ago. Spent one night in Marrakesh , then took a 2-3 hour bus ride to Essaouira on the Atlantic coast. Fortified town/ fortress formerly known as Mogador. Stayed there for two weeks but also did some travel to Agadir and then inland through a place known as the valley of paradise and a very long trip through the country.
Essaouira was really great, my Dad and I ate great food for about 8 dollars a day, for two !!
I'm not a great fish lover and the only time I ever liked a fish dish was there, ( not counting salmon).
My Dad has been many times so he had a friend that sort of guided and knew many awesome places, did all the cooking when we didn't eat at restaurants. He was happy to hang out and lead the adventure.
We didn't have plans for sleeping and we figured ( I don't care, I'm an adventurer) , we'd sleep in the car or under the car or on top of the car.
Every evening Majid would talk to someone who was a cousins uncles sistets brother and we'd be invited to crash on their couch. This happened every night we were away from Essaouira.
Essaouira was a mecca for American hippies in the 60's and 70's and the Moroccains really liked the hippies because they were all about love, so, me having long hair and being American, everyone there was so friendly to me
Theres a ruin of a castle/ between Essaouira and Diabet which are less than a mile apart, on the beach. That's where Jimi Hendrix wrote "Castles Made Of Sand". You see murals of Jimi here and there.
Imsouane is a town south of Essaouira about 30 minutes on the coast. Its a surfing mecca and has a cool surf culture. There too people were very friendly.
The town of Essaouira is a market town that is obviously the end of a trade route. There's a market every day, essentially the entire town is a market every day and you get a string feeling that that has never and will never lack for food. Incredible amount of food, piles of olives of every color , I can't justly describe it.
It's definitely third world and mostly muslim but I had no trouble drinking whiskey with Majid and finding hashish on the port.
Many locals get their living from the sea so everyone leaves at 4 am. to fish and is back in port by ~11 am. to sell what they caught at market.
There's so much to tell I can't include everything.
The advantage I had that made the trip great was, I looked like a hippie, (not like any typical tourist) , I speak French, I had my Dad and his good friend with me. I was always ready for anything. I'm good at making friends and have been to other countries so I'm not too prone to culture shock.
I'm an adventurer.
Some things Americans might not be ready for, many toilets are just a ceramic thing on the floor with two foot treads where you stand and squat. Takes getting used to.

The amount of litter, especially plastic bags, which are caught up wherever the wind blows them, that was honestly the saddest thing I saw, the litter.. otherwise a beautiful country. Banana plantations, date palm groves, old / castles Mansions of long gone war lords, pomegranate trees.
One if the best experiences was having the mist delicious fresh squeezed orange juice every morning. I definitely felt like I could live there forever and miss nothing of the USA. ... except my wife and kids and grandkids.
You could buy a small hotel there for half the price of a small house in the US and live out your life on easy street.
I loved it. Going back next year in April-May.

If you want to go to North Africa do it as a part of a tour, whether for the day for multiple days. Tour groups are generally left alone by random beggars and thieves. You pay for this privilege of course in your ticket price, but generally it's not an insane amount. You can argue that you're not getting the authentic experience but if being constantly hassled by beggars and hustlers is your idea of a good time then fill your boots.

We were on a tour to Tangiers for the day. Had a great time, highly recommended. We went to several rug shops and other places selling tourist gewgaws, saw some sights, had a great meal, and we were not bothered by the locals at all. But right at the end of the day before getting on the ferry back to Portugal the bus stopped by the side of the road and we were mobbed by local vendors selling everything you could possible think of.

I'll never forget the guys hanging off the side of the bus after it started off again, still shouting "Lifetime warranty". It was insane.

My personal travel policy has always been to travel only to countries where the overwhelming majority were as white as I am. The only exception is Japan. Enjoyed France in the 90's but its off the list now. I have refused employers who wanted to send me to Beruit and Riyadh.
