browser history is about the only thing boomers can understand. if he explained that it is watching how your mouse moves around before the click people would be like "Wait, it's recording how I move my mouse, what I hover over, etc?" and start asking real questions.
I doubt it extracts browsing history from the browser itself. I think JavaScript does not give that sort of permission without explicit user consent.
What it could do though, is extract your browser fingerprint and compare that to data stored on Google servers. The server stores all your previous visits where Google analytics was used, or where you did plain Google searches. That's more likely where it gets your history from.
I tried once an extension that randomizes your browser fingerprint, and browsing the net became a total nightmare. Every page I had to solve a captcha puzzle, because big brother data mining algos could not figure out who I was.

The mouse movement and click itself provides information. The timing of the mouse movements, irregularity of steps, how long you click the button.
