Well everyone fakes their physical appearance or attractiveness to some degree, The question is where do you draw the line?

This is all down to how aggressive you want to allow sexual competition to be in your society. Men do this too with bodybuilding and cars and tattoos and expensive suits. When sexual display becomes too excessive it just becomes and arms race of deception.

Now the amish all wear the same thing. Everyone wears their hair the same. Noone wears makeup. It saves time and dating is more WYSIWYG. When you allow too much sexual competition the vainest people and the biggest decievers are going to tend to win at reproduction, so arguably its dysgenic. The absolute worst women spend the most time on their appearance.

But there are almost no straight women who dont wear any makeup. Men have come to expect it and women who dont wear it tend not to get noticed.

The Amish have a great system though. They are really very democratic and decentralized so they avoid the corruption that comes with hierarchy. They are incredibly egalitarian. And the “plainess” requirement of the amish and other groups is actually very eugenic because people who are very status seeking and showy are predisposed to be dishonest and greedy. You do not want high levels of in-group competition. Displays of wealth are also sexual displays. This is why rapper millionaires are the most showy and obnoxious but many other eurasian cultures like middle easterners, southern europeans, indians, south east asians are also into “showing off”. Any society that engages in elaborate displays of wealth in clothing or architecture will have high levels of in-group competition— corruption and exploitation and violence. Its antithetical to egalitarian cooperative societies, which are the most productive and fair. Its a sign not just of false advertising but also a willingness to screw over your neighbor to get the most or the best, to have MOAR. The worst most dishonest people in society are found not just at the bottom but also at the top.

Agreed. I used to live right on the edge of their territory. Unlike us "English", their way of living is sustainable and good. The one caveat is their tendency to produce too many children, which I suspect ultimately leads to the same place as the cancer model we follow.
