Of course they beat the shit out of the franchise. There were 7 movies and 2 TV spinoffs. This is how it was back in the 80s and 90s. Every good movie had a sequel which was fairly decent, a 'III' that was mediocre and a 'IV' that was shit etc...

This was back when HollyWood knew enough to just bleed a franchise of every last cent and then let it die. This was back when HW could actually just move on and start a new franchise because they had real writers. Now they literally don't have writers, just propagandists.
