I know semi drivers warn to not hold the steering wheel with your fingers around it, just on the outside.

I did a little more research. Apparently in some situations the wheel can jerk around a lot, perhaps more on a semi, and take your thumb with it, or at least cause injury. Also with airbags when the grenade explodes you don't want your hands hanging on to the steering wheel. A few links:

The modern consensus is firm grip at the 3 and 9 positions, and is recommended by the NHTSA, DOT, most states' DMVs, and most driving schools. If wheel is properly aligned (actually fairly uncommon with trucks, which is another story), fingers won't completely wrap around. It's in every state's CMV guidebook that can be picked up for free at your local DMV (or whatever the hell your state happens to call it).

If you blow a steer tire or the power steering pump fails, you had better be gripping well with both hands and get ready to throw in some muscle, because your bones can be toothpicks against the feedback.
