Does anyone think it's odd that these cities have their own political structures and funding through which they could pass almost any program without effecting other people, yet winning national elections is somehow important to them?
Forcing humans into close quarters like in cities causes them to enact their naturally volatile self-preservation instincts. Then a politician gets to step in and play referee. Creating conflict between people so you can appoint yourself as referee has been a tactic of mass psychological manipulation used since at least ancient Rome. Putting them close together in a city speeds up the process. Democrats are anti-status quo upstarts that want to grab hold of the system and use it for themselves. Republicans have traditionally been the wealthy elite that want to preserve the status quo. Rural people don't need change and typically identify with preserving the status quo. Neither side is better, the Republicans only appear better at this present moment in time because they made the decision to stop doing anything that could rock the boat ever since Trump accidentally usurped their party leadership.
It doesn't end. The fact is, people's fears are always kicking in urban areas and the people living there have demands they grow up with expecting to bring them safety.
Its like watching a rat grow up in a torture chamber, and wondering what the fuck is wrong with them.
This guy gets it. Cities over promise and under deliver. The appeal of the city is convenience, yet no one in the city has any. It's where people learn to expect less from themselves and each other.
Humans are not supposed to live this close to each other.

Look at just a few instincts that regularly get triggered living in the city:
Offended more. (Survival)
cut off in traffic more (survival)
Laid off more (survival)
divorced more(survival)
in general conflict more (survival)
