I was pushing my bike along a somewhat remote track near the sea. A heavily vegetated area with only room for one person on the track when stone the crows this old dear emerged in front of me with a walking pole, runners and a Yankee drawl.
She didn't seem frightened to run into me which says she was stout-of-heart or I look un-threatening. She was bushwhacked and wanted directions (yes, the second female in a matter of days who has sought directions from me).
I started to mumble a few things and, as is the way of humans, she moved closer to me. Human beings can't speak to each other unless they see the whites of your eyes.
I said: "I'm trying to socially distance if you don't mind" and she muttered: "oh of course"; and anyway I couldn't direct her to the place she wanted to go and could only tell her how to get out of the place she was in and she seemed quite unimpressed.
The second woman in a matter of days who seemed to think all men are walking travel maps. Anyway... a couple of walkers turned up and she quickly lost interest in me and here is the interesting bit...she flattened herself against the bush and let me get though and said something like: "you'll want to socially distance" and I said, trying to be friendly: "I hope you socially distance too and...wear a mask" and she dismissed me huffily and said: "done all that".
Now my point is...with that sort of attitude how can the Health Authorities win? Ok she was American and, well, let's not go there, but the Covid hasn't gone anywhere and people need to take social distancing and mask-wearing seriously.
