You could assume who they were sacrificed to based on where they were buried. If only children that didn't have other painful ailments had their finger nails removed you can assume long term pain has a part in the sacrifice. The nature of each god is known. So the only big leap is assuming leeching water from kids would please the god that can leech water from the sky.

Depends on the condition of the grave they were in. If there was any sort of preservation, the fingernails and hair will be intact and shouldn't be missing.

The pre-Columbian civilizations also had writing systems and many of the texts describe the human sacrifices. Unlike the holocaust, all the facts here are consistent with one another: European witnesses, written records, human remains, artifacts...

An anthropology school called the psychohistorians (who are a sort of leftwing freudian group) have documented alot of child abuse and infantacide in various cultures (to support their freudian hypothesis) and they have tended to be more objective about child killing and other child abuse in primitive cultures, without apologizing for native practices as mainstream anthropology tends to do. They have done some good work recording the atrocities of the “noble savage” even though some of their conclusions are wacky.

There must be another explanation. I suspect these people required brutality as a fundamental part of their life.
