I do kind of agree that a college education is not only lost a lot of its luster but I think in many ways it's not a negative but it does make you immediately suspicious about the person if they rather recently went to college and came out with a lot of debt. I'm not in a position to hire people right now but I think if I was I would do the Elon Musk thing which is really have an in-depth interview with people to get to the bottom of what contributions they've made to learn how they think. These days research and information is available to anybody so what you gathered at college is a lot less important. What's more important is can you make either novel connections to be inventive if your job will call for it or are you very happy to do a routine and do it well if your job will call for that. Plus how do you get along with others in a workplace environment if that's necessary and will you be a troublemaker or will you be one of those rare employees that makes it slightly more fun for everybody else to come to work to see.
