Does anyone know what's up with notabug these days?

submitted by pickingrinninspittin to AskUpgoat 1.6 yearsOct 18, 2022 14:39:43 ago (+8/-0)     (AskUpgoat)

For the past week or so notabug.io has increasingly been populated with posted links that appear to be random strings of characters. Is the site under attack by bots?

Someone found the notabug version of the reddit enhancement suite, modified the rapid vote mechanism to read a list of subs, generate random strings, and rapid fire post.

Why?

Because someone got tired of one person/group trying to control an unmoderated site where you can post and comment and vote without logging in and would use admin powers to add up to 100 votes (up or down) at a time if you dared to vote to reverse their actions or comment on it.

In other words, whoever controls the site was using it to push what they wanted, hide what they didn't want there and people got tired of it.

Thanks. I figured it had to be something like that. But I was completely unaware of the situation that you describe, and I generally checked the site out daily!

In fact it always felt to me that notabug was rather weak cheese when it came to content accumulator sites. Most of the posts were fairly tepid and uninteresting. I certainly never noticed any posts or comments with anything close to 100 up/down votes.

I did notice, however, that if i even made a comment complaining about niggers or that pushed against the woke narrative in any way it would get down voted pretty fast, but only enough to make it not visible. But I didn't make a point of commenting there much so I didn't really care either way.

Other than that I never got the sense that someone was promoting their agenda. Was I really that oblivious, or did you have to live and breath notabug to pick up on it?

but only enough to make it not visible

That's the admin at work. It's always that pattern.

I found the same script that they modified (it's not hard to find). Deciding to have some fun with it and, having a high end computer, I set the script on one comment the retard didn't like and just blasted it with upvotes using multiple tabs and windows. The conversation that generated by other users was hilarious. In the meantime, admin had to modify the voting algorithm so he could get ahead. That's when the downvote count was jumping 100 a pop. I eventually got tired of it because it really didn't mean anything in the long run.

If you ever want to have fun, there's always a porn post he keeps upvoted to the front. Just keep downvoting it until it's no longer on front. Holy fuck the dude will go fucking ballistic and flood the site with porn.

It's a damn crying shame because early on it had an actual community and people took the site about as serious as we do here. But little monkey-brained fuck wanted the site to himself and ran everyone off.

Was I really that oblivious, or did you have to live and breath notabug to pick up on it?

Nah, all you had to do was try to comment anything for a week or two to see it. The chat would always have activity but comments on posts usually didn't happen. Then again, watching OG Voat and the techniques everyone would try to use to control posts and comments made it blindingly obvious so quickly.

Good to know. Thanks for filling in the blanks!

notabug.io has been timing out for the past couple days. Do you know if it's dead for good or is this just the next stage?

If it's not permanently dead, it'll be down for a while. The site was getting hit with what looked like a chat message every second and a new post every few seconds to a few minutes. Since the data is always polled dynamically with live updates for every client, I'm guessing that the massive sudden and sustained additions to the database and new subs (you can create a sub just by posting to it when it doesn't exist) swamped the site so hard that it couldn't keep up when it came to performance. Poor optimization and so much data submitted around the same time period is likely timing out the database and/or the web server. For a while, it was so fucked that it was showing only the top maybe 15 latest posts and then skipping to shit 3 and 5 years old.

It's likely to be gone for a while since the site's owner is pretty much widely known to have left it alone and fucked off to wherever.

I have noticed some kind of bot spamming going on for a couple of days now. Seems to be gumming up the wheels.
I don’t think the site owner checks in too often these days.
The site was designed to be autonomous but it looks like it could use a little help now.

boy, you're not kidding:

must be some bot turned on that site to drown it out and force users to go elsewhere. i'd be willing to bet some college script kiddie with an antifa sticker on their laptop.

Sounds quite possible, whoever it is is contributing substantial amounts of processing power to the site with all those up-votes. I do hope the admin is siphoning off some of that for a little mining on the side :)

Data isn't random, that's a series of related hash strings.

Okay. But a hash of what?

Will be clear in two weeks.
