Yeah that used to happen, but they are a lot better now.
What I haven't compared in a while is the performance of a SSD versus a RAID of spinny SCSI drives. It used to be that you weren't getting that much more (if any more) performance out of SSD, and you were sacrificing a lot of space. IDK, though, SSD performance has been going up like exponentially and prices going way down.
The early cheap SSDs, I guess it was MLC?, had poor MTBF, and the early expensive ones, SLC I guess?, were tiny. I stay away from total no-name stuff, but the name brand SSDs are affordable these days. <$200 for 2TB which is more than most people need. It depends on what you're trying to do, but I wouldn't recommend spinny drives to normies outside of bulk backups.
Might be time to give them another try. The Samsung SSDs have never failed me. The only mechanical drives I trust are HGST helium filled and they're harder to come by now. I get WD and Seagate mech drive failures showing up routinely. Depends on if you keep them cool, like all electronics... What brand do you like for mech drives?
