I spent a lot of years in the US navy and not once did I hear news of infestations of cockroaches, tainted water, and the like, nor did preventable incidents like ship collisions occur. The degrading of the navy began when niggers and Filipinos were allowed to enter ratings beyond service jobs. When women entered the navy in large numbers, I could see it causing lasting damage and I got out.

E-coli in potable water ... fucking stupid. And they're supposed to test potable water every day. People were gundecking it.

Was aboard the USS Saipan in the mid '80's as a jarhead, the ship was clean and the chow was great.

I remember the Saipan LHA-1. She was homeported in Norfolk, where my ship was. She was big, too large for usual ship's berthing, so she was berthed at the far end at either piers 12 or 14. I was on an amphibious troop transport ship also, and we would stop at Morehead City, NC, to receive marines and munitions before we deployed.

I liked the marines we took on board. They were very intense about being marines, which I respected, and when given duties like working in the scullery, the took it seriously.

We were part of a big NATO exercise in northern Norway, I wasn't expecting a ship that size to move around much but 60ft swells in the North Atlantic showed me otherwise. Had a blast, best cruise/camping trip ever.

My ship was part of that too. 1984, north Atlantic. Our participation was part of an operation concerning transporting cargo containers called JLOTS, or Joint Logistics Over The Seas. We went past the Arctic circle and had a ceremony where everyone involved was initiated as a Bluenose. It was really a lot of fun being able to cut loose after so much hard work. I was never able to see the aurora borealis, unfortunately, but at the end we visited Portsmouth, England, Amsterdam, and Bermerhaven. Great port cities.

I did get to see the aurora and spend some tourist time in Tromso. we were all amazed at the fact that there were no fat or even un attractive Norwegians, but damn the beer was expensive.

That's that Scandinavian socialism for you. My ship went to the North Atlantic in 1981, before I arrive on board. A friend told me pretty much the same thing you did when they visited Gothenburg, Sweden. Very expensive, and stunningly beautiful women who would happily sleep with men if they liked you.
