Some years ago, my best friend and I took a weekend trip out of state to a gun show. Between us, we bought over $5,000 of guns and ammo and were soon on the way home.

And that's when I had a thought. I turned to him and said "Men, we're idiots. We buy all this stuff and take it home to where we can't shoot it or really have any fun with it at all." He asked me: "So what else should we do?" I thought about it for a moment, and then replied "Well, how about air guns? There are a bunch of really good replicas. And since we mostly shoot paper, there's not too much of a difference, and we can shoot them in our back yards and for really cheap." He looked at me as though I'd suggested eating shit and said "Air guns? Toys? No. There's way too much of a difference. I'm not buying toys."

And so we drove the rest of the way home and everything was fine.

And then I decided to buy an air pistol what was a good replica of a real one I own. I shot it. Sure it wasn't loud, and while it has "blow-back", it certainly didn't kick as much. But it's about exactly the same shape and weight as the real thing, and I enjoyed training a bit with it.

I showed that replica pistol to my friend. And something happened.

Well, we both now own a bunch of air guns. Sure, we've got plenty of real ones. But where we live right now, we can't use the real ones like we'd like to. And so the air guns do the trick for keeping our skills sharp, as we as having a bunch of fun on the cheap.

A lot of people bag on air guns. Oh, they're just toys. Oh, they're fake and for pussies.

Whatever. If you mostly shoot paper, air guns are great to have around.
