Southern Italians tend not to look white in colour, being dark/swarthy, but the normal meaning of a white person means someone who is not a black person (no offense to black persons) and on that definition...Southern Italians are white (not that I really give a fig).

I have some Italian in me. An Italian person that gets a lot of sun can look like hip hop Ariana Grande. That same person that works an office job and is vitamin D deficient will look like Disney Ariana Grande. I also have some Nordic and German in me, and thus I don't tan. People like me you can put out in the sun as much as you want, and we'll never become dark skinned. Laborers fresh off the boat were probably quite tan, and that was a class marker back then. So I'm sure Anglo Saxon people looked at them and thought "black," but people with those same genes today might not look like that unless they get an extended vacation (and we're American, so that doesn't happen for most of us)

There is less genetic distance between southern and northern Italians than between southern and northern German speakers. I dunno what people expect but northern Italians themselves rarely resemble Danes.
