The area I was in, the restaurants provided rice and vegetables and would cook it with whatever creature you carried in. They would not prepare just rice and vegetables. For the entree, you had to go out on the street and buy a live fucking turtle, or a fish, or eel. Then you bring it into the restaurant and they killed it and served it very rare on the plate of sides that you bought from them.

Often you couldn’t see what you were buying. The critters would be in a thing like a cooler with a chinaman sitting on top. No sign saying what was in there, although the locals seemed to know what was in the boxes. If the guy hopped off the box and opened it to reveal god knows what, and you declined the transaction, they would yell in their horrible tongue. I mostly ate from a vending machine.

One day, school was letting out and I saw a bunch of kids running excitedly to a street vendors cart. I thought, maybe this bastard has something edible. The kids were buying these things that looked like pudding cups. Inside was a little dead octopus in a clear jelly like substance. The girls pulled out chopsticks and extracted the purple\grey octopus and chewed it. The boys ate in one gulp, slime and all, and handed the cup back to the vendor. I moved on.
