Yeah, just saw that, they are turning it off pre-emptively. Seems strange to me, but my power goes off if someone sneezes too hard.

I ordered a Chinese generator from Amazon. Was heading to the store, so knowing it would ship sans oil I checked the online owners manual for the type of oil. Said change interval was 20 hours. WTF. So I checked reviews and comments. No oil filter. Change oil every 20 hours as recommended. WTF this was a 10500 watt continuous generator on a 20hp motor and that's the motor they put on it??? So if I run the generator for 3 days that's 3 oil changes. Cancelled the order. JFC it's like they have a gibberish generator designing products.

So now I'm reevaluating. Back to using my 110v Honda and no well pump or AC for this storm.

A lot of well pumps can run on 110v, just change one hot to a neutral, did the same here

Hurricanes tend to blow transformers for some reason, must be a lot of EM waves, the eye of the hurricane connects with the ionosphere, so this tends to cause EMPs. This tends to also knock out phone service.

Its the slapping of the phases that cause the surges that blow the transformers.

Plus a mixture of other crap as well. Like water ingress into components. Usually these types of failures happen before the reclosers or other auto-sectionalizers catch the fault and shut the line off.

Its the wind causing the phases (conductors) to sway into each other. When they slap together you can get arcing which causes power surges. These are momentary faults that clear them selves. The reclosers are designed when a fault is detected they will pulse the power a few times to try to clear the fault. If the fault isn't cleared. It shuts the power off. Slapping, sometimes isn't caught by the reclosers or other fault sensing equipment which can cause other components to fail down the line.

I looked up both, and I'm pretty much 99% wrong about my random sandbar comment. Parts of Florida were definitely built up by river sediments carried down from the Appalachian formation, but those rivers weren't really "the Mississippi", even though some eventually became part of that watershed.

The thing about the Johns and Nile being the only two north-flowimg rivers is wrong too though. Look it up! I immediately thought of the Ob river in Siberia, and it turns out there are 100s of others.

At least we can be wrong together...

Mine was still on in Madeira beach a couple hours ago. I'm in an A zone and had to evacuate. Tropical storm winds and rain. No big deal a hundred miles north of the hurricane. I'll be home in the morning.hope the power stays on.
