Sugar but back then people had standards. I have a Chinese friend in the US. She visited home and a lot of people casually commented on how fat she got. "Wow you got fat haha". She lost appetite and lost weight while she was there. Embarrassment is a hell of a diet tool but there is no embarrassment if everyone is fat.
