I tried calculating the energy needs to build a wind turbine vs. the energy production of said wind turbine. I'm a bit fuzzy on the details, but i think it was something like the wind turbine needs to run for 50 years at it's maximum potential to make up the power it needed for it's construction. Most wind turbines to my knowledge have a life expectancy of around 25 years.
Its even worse when the don't run for so long you need to connect them to generators and make them spin so they don't get damaged. (Offshore Park "Riffgat" anyone?!)
And the tons and tons of oil needed to make them run.

Even with depopulation, it'd still be more efficient to just directly use whatever 'dirty' energy you wasted on the windmill. Of those who understand this, and still push for windmills, I could think of two explanations:
1) They don't care about efficiency. They want to prey on ignorance and use it to direct funds/resources to their fiefdoms/constituents. If their political allies are more able to work with steel and don't have a access to an oil-field, it's going to be the windmill. Again, those people could build a coal plant but if you offer them money for a windmill, they'll take that over nothing.
2) They hope that by 'investing' in 'green' 'tech', they can advance the state of the art itself. They're hoping to build supply chains and economies of scale and get more brains working on related problems to eventually 'level the playing field' and develop the currently-less-mature industries into something more competitive.
And government subsidies obscure the natural economy that would otherwise make this obvious. Absent government intervention, it would cost you more to build this windmill than you could expect to recover selling the energy.
But it doesn't matter because a quick buck can be made, then you just write it off and let jet again the gov save you.
Now lets crunch the cost of scraping those things (the blades will never rot or can be recycled) the nature that got destroyed and nobody will dig the concrete slab up. All the interventions the fucking hippies willl demand for all the endangered birds that only got endangered because of how man those things killed....
