I quit caffeine

submitted by PostWallHelena to fitness 1.6 yearsSep 20, 2022 20:25:34 ago (+41/-1)     (fitness)

Basically. Well I’m still drinking the decaf coffee which is maybe 1/10 the caff or so.
I’ve felt some cravings which have eased up. It’s been maybe 2 or 3 weeks.

I’m sleeping much better. Right through the night. Can’t tell if it’s helped my mood yet. I’m hoping I will be a bit more even keeled and not so spikey and tense. I think I’ll have a better sense of that in a month or so.

I’ve just been a caffeine junky for so long and Ive decided not to accept it any more. Wish me luck!

Coffee is our greatest strength.

[ - ] x0x7 3 points 1.6 yearsSep 21, 2022 08:22:50 ago (+3/-0)

Lol.. because it has trace soluble fiber. Eat a bowl of oat meal then. It reminds me of when people say wine is healthy because it has antioxidents. But that's not anywhere near exclusive to wine. So does grape juice or chocolate. But no body is going to waste time calling grape juice a super healthy drink. People are just coming up with excuses to drink what they want to drink.

You can become the healthiest man alive drinking beer: https://www.piedmont.org/living-better/the-health-benefits-of-beer

And, why cigars are actually good for you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ye_TcO5tOeo

If people like it and someone makes money off it there is going to be a health benefits list somewhere.

I think most coffee benefits can be attributed to phenols and theanine which have other sources that dont contain caffeine.

May want to look into the decaf process and ensure you're not poisoning yourself.

Good on you for breaking the habit!

[ - ] Gowithit 1 point 1.6 yearsSep 20, 2022 20:33:33 ago (+1/-0)

Poisoning.. what? Is this a thing?

[ - ] bobdole9 7 points 1.6 yearsSep 20, 2022 20:39:56 ago (+7/-0)

There's a chemical used to strip the caffeine. Several people who have used Starbucks decaf regularly had run into health issues. Once they quit decaf the issues resolved.

[ - ] PostWallHelena [op] 6 points 1.6 yearsSep 20, 2022 20:50:43 ago (+6/-0)

Maybe Ill switch to chickory or something.

[ - ] Fascinus 4 points 1.6 yearsSep 20, 2022 21:49:42 ago (+4/-0)

Chicory and Dandelion root blend isn't half bad.

Good for you too.

I've seen blends on the market and, so far, haven't found any that are organic at any of the retail locations I frequent. I buy organic Chicory and Dandelion root separately and mix them half and half.

I'll occasionally drink this when I want another coffee-like drink without having more coffee.

[ - ] PostWallHelena [op] 0 points 1.6 yearsSep 20, 2022 21:58:27 ago (+0/-0)

That sounds great. I was thinking about switching to a decaf green tea because of the catechins but sometimes you want something more savory.

[ - ] Fascinus 0 points 1.6 yearsSep 20, 2022 22:06:21 ago (+0/-0)

It's pretty far from the same as coffee. It's a little more bitter and the mouth-feel is on par with coffee.

My favorite coffee substitute, by far, is Chaga. It's *super* good for you (Chaga is known as the king of medicinal mushrooms. It has adaptogenic and anti-carcinogenic properties, among others), has a very similar mouth-feel/viscosity to coffee and tastes like a slightly lighter, unsweetened maple syrup (most Chaga is harvested from Birch).

The best Chaga I've found, by far, is the extract sold by Sayan. I've had it both with and without Betulin and haven't noticed a difference.

If I'm buying today, it's with.

Great shit.

[ - ] PostWallHelena [op] 0 points 1.6 yearsSep 21, 2022 15:23:21 ago (+0/-0)

I read up on this, thanks.

Whats the difference between betulin and no betulin? Afaik betulin is a flavonoid with some antioxident properties, maybe some other health benefits. Do they have to remove the betulin for some reason? Its got to be in the chagas if it’s growing on a birch tree. Does it alter the flavor?

[ - ] Fascinus 0 points 1.6 yearsSep 21, 2022 15:46:15 ago (+0/-0)

They add it.

I haven't noticed a difference in flavor, though I've never tried them side by side.

The only difference I noticed was that the extract powder without betulin is very dark, almost like charcoal whereas the extract with betulin is lighter in color.

[ - ] PostWallHelena [op] 0 points 1.6 yearsSep 21, 2022 16:28:13 ago (+0/-0)

Huh. So I guess theyve got alot of birch on hand from the chaga and they figure why not strip the bark and pull out the betulin.

Chicory causes gastro-intestinal issues.

[ - ] bobdole9 1 point 1.6 yearsSep 21, 2022 06:34:52 ago (+1/-0)

If decaf coffee is the long-term solution, might be worthwhile to reconsider and pick a different morning drink.

Is the ultimate goal no caffeine at all? If so, a goal of one cup of regular coffee would be a bad suggestion.

[ - ] x0x7 0 points 1.6 yearsSep 21, 2022 08:25:38 ago (+0/-0)

Why not drink water?

[ - ] Fascinus 3 points 1.6 yearsSep 20, 2022 21:46:04 ago (+3/-0)

There are different methods of decaffeinating coffee.

Swiss water method seems legit: https://www.swisswater.com/pages/coffee-decaffeination-process

[ - ] WEHRMACHT_BITCHES_AT 2 points 1.6 yearsSep 21, 2022 10:34:19 ago (+2/-0)

Swiss water decaf is done without chemicals. Unless the coffee specifies that this process was used it was probably done chemically and should be avoided.

I get very bad headaches if I dont have a coffee everyday. I would really like to back down off that cliff.

On the bright side, I really like peppermint tea and it would be a suitable replacement except for... ooow my head... yea. In other news, I quit smoking cigs 100%, 3 packs a day to no cigs for 4-5 months. Hooked on the nico-pods now, they have fermaldahyde in them...

whether for good or ill, you made a choice and did it, that is good and wholesome.

[ - ] PostWallHelena [op] 0 points 1.6 yearsSep 21, 2022 16:14:07 ago (+0/-0)

I had to quit smoking too. Maybe 15 or 20 yrs ago. It was hard. Many relapses. I used the patches. I kept cutting the patches in to tinier and tinier squares until I was down to nothing. It worked for me. After that I had occassional urges to smoke for a year, maybe two. And then the addiction was totally gone. You know when the smoke smells bad to you. It still smells good for a while if you get a whiff, but eventually your brain forgets the addiction.

Quitting smoking taught me that feeling like you can’t live without a thing is just an illusion. Its like I never smoked at all now and I smoked for ~16 or 17 years.

One thing I did recently discover is that nicotine significantly increases your testosterone. Just fyi.

Good luck with managing your own habits. This site is a good source of encouragement if you need it,

[ - ] o0shad0o 2 points 1.6 yearsSep 21, 2022 07:37:49 ago (+2/-0)

I was having some trouble sleeping, but I found out that by drinking only dark-roast coffee (which has less caffeine than the alternatives) after noon and never more than a few hours after that I stopped having issues.

Meanwhile, in the morning? Double red-eyes for me! Black, of course.

[ - ] MuricaPersonified 2 points 1.6 yearsSep 20, 2022 23:40:58 ago (+2/-0)

Caffeine is as tough to quit as nicotine; congrats. Haven't given up caffeine but switched to green tea last year. The jew colas and laxative bean juice are gone.

[ - ] PostWallHelena [op] 0 points 1.6 yearsSep 21, 2022 15:29:22 ago (+0/-0)

Green tea is a much healthier choice imo. I read alot on the EGCG last year because of covid and I was gonna drink like 8 cups a day if I got it. But Im too wiley for that fucking virus. Anyway it’s good for cancer prevention and inflamation and all that.

[ - ] BoozyB 2 points 1.6 yearsSep 20, 2022 21:02:05 ago (+2/-0)

I make one and only one 12oz cup every morning using an Aeropress. That gets me moving with no ill effects. I went to the ER once thinking I was having a heart attack, but it was a false alarm and likely due to caffeine OD.

[ - ] Gowithit 0 points 1.6 yearsSep 20, 2022 21:06:04 ago (+0/-0)

You have the patience of a saint if you are using an aeropress.

[ - ] Crackinjokes 2 points 1.6 yearsSep 20, 2022 20:34:45 ago (+2/-0)

I have done this. What I ended up with that works for me is an exact amount.

I get caffeine pills that are 100mg.

I have that in decafe coffee.

It gets me going. Without it no matter how long I wean off caffeine I simply do not get the same level of physical work done.

But more than that and it's too much and counter productive.

If you find you get TOOO relaxed and just don't have the energy you need without caffeine then get some caffeine capsules. Amazon or anywhere.

[ - ] PostWallHelena [op] 3 points 1.6 yearsSep 20, 2022 21:01:03 ago (+3/-0)

You know, Ive felt “low energy” for my entire adult life. Ive always struggled with it. I have usually tried to solve it with more coffee. But it just feels like chasing the dragon. It doesnt work.

So I thought fuck it. Im not going to be anymore tired overall than I already am. And I dont really feel more tired except at bed time. I actually had some sleepy moments around noon for the first week but it passed.

Have you tried going low/no sugar? Keto can help folks in your situation. I'd give it about 3 months to see if it works for you.

But you have to be able to go full-keto for a proper test, I've seen too many idiots not checking things and just assuming something like rice is low-carb.

[ - ] Gowithit 2 points 1.6 yearsSep 20, 2022 20:32:24 ago (+3/-1)

This has to be very difficult to do. Not just with the caffeine but more as in quitting the habit itself.

But congratulations on the couple of weeks.

[ - ] PostWallHelena [op] 2 points 1.6 yearsSep 20, 2022 20:49:22 ago (+3/-1)

This is like the 3rd major addiction Ive given up. I could have saved myself a lot of trouble my never starting any of it. We’ve been plied with caffeine since the colonial era. Its not beneficial to society, Its a waste of resources so why do we do it? Because its incredibly addictive.

I’ve caught myself thinking “omg if I had some caffeinated coffee right now I would get so fucked up on it!” , because it feels like I’m craving a high. But I think the worst is over. I was just feeling the itch though a few minutes ago so I thought, you know, brag about it a bit on voat and that will help me with staying consistent.

[ - ] Gowithit 3 points 1.6 yearsSep 20, 2022 20:58:07 ago (+4/-1)

We were given it as children. It was just a normal thing to have.

I gave it to my kids too since they were babies. Not whole bottles haha but like little sips here and there.

But weirdly enough none of them like it anymore. Once in awhile the oldest might but that's every couple of months maybe.

I think it just grabs on to a certain type of person.

I know you quit the smoking, which is the left hand to coffee. These are very difficult vices to stop. More power to you on your ability to do so.

[ - ] bobdole9 1 point 1.6 yearsSep 21, 2022 06:37:08 ago (+1/-0)

Two weeks after you quit caffeine you are going to be hit hard. It’s going to hurt. You might convince yourself that just a little caffeine won’t hurt.

Why? Are you retarded (rhetorical)
How many cups a day were you drinking?

While it’s true each person has a different tolerance threshold for caffeine, it’s side effects are overblown. In fact, caffeine in the right amount is good for you. Coffee got a bad rep for no reason (actually maybe because it’s so good, the overlords starting the negative propaganda, similar to tobacco but I have not studied that yet).
All, or perhaps many of, the eminent figures in philosophy and science have been known to have loads of coffee. Look it up.

I doubt you are jittery and moody because of caffeine. It’s because you have a bitchy personality and you are menopausal and have no kids.
You are probably a vegan retard as well. Up your animal food a bit. To sleep well, you need to expose yourself to bright sunlight in the first hour of waking up, and avoid blue light from peri sunset. Instead of quitting coffee, you can stop drinking it by noon. Exercising moderately during the first half of the day also helps. You can also benefit from eating a small snack of simple carbs and fat if not sleeping through the night is your issue. Honey and milk is an ancient remedy.

[ - ] Ragnar 0 points 1.6 yearsSep 21, 2022 17:25:57 ago (+0/-0)

Do you know what aspie even is. You call me an autist then aspie because you are a very uneducated loser. It’s not even autism technically. It was a separate category until recently when they decided to shame great men. And before that it was just synonymous with a very gifted, if a bit awkward, man.
Your insults are unintelligent. You are not even funny. Maybe use physical “comedy” like your people do.

Out of curiosity, how much caffeine were you consuming daily before you decided to quit?

[ - ] PostWallHelena [op] 0 points 1.6 yearsSep 21, 2022 16:34:22 ago (+0/-0)

Maybe 5 or 6 cups of half caff or decaf a day. Occassionally a cup of regular. So maybe the equivalent of 2 or 3 cups of fully caffeinated coffee.

[ - ] oyy_veyy_goyy 0 points 1.6 yearsSep 21, 2022 16:56:35 ago (+0/-0)

2-3 isn't so bad. Not great, but not terrible either. Some caffeine junkies will down like half a dozen cups daily. Regardless, good on you for starting on cutting it out of your life.
