Telegram requires a phone number to register. All telegram chats and participants are stored in plain text file.

That said, USA is one of the handful of countries where you can buy a phone number without divulging your identity. Just don't activate or keep it near your main phone.

You can also just use your phone (or PC?) and download a VOIP app and use that fake phone number to make an account. I know my AT&T already tracks everything I do. I honestly don't care. Just don't say stupid shit.
