There is an excellent book released many years ago called Genetic Roulette. In it the author explains how one of these mad hatter scientist decided to tinker with the bacteria E. Coli, and insert a gene into it that would cause cancer.

Now for those who do not know, E. Coli is one of the most abundant bacteria in the colon of every human being. It is an essential bacteria for every one of us.

After the lunatic told his peers about his experiment, there luckily happened to be one adult in the room that pointed out, that if this genetically modified bacteria, living in every human on the planet, would now escape the lab, it could completely devastate humanity forever.

The experiment was put in the incinerator.
