That powertrain had astounding potential for hotrodding, too; I can tell you firsthand. Pretty easy to work on for what it is, too. That engine started my love affair with German machines, I believe.

I installed 103mm pistons, larger valves, ported and polished the head with dual spring high ratio rocker arms and a set of dual 44idf webers. It made some serious power on mine. I had two oif them, had to sell the wife's when we had the second kid.
And with all that added power, we broke a transmission twice, so I bought a really beefed up 'racing' transmission for the thing for $800 - can you imagine getting a brand new transmission for a price like that these days?! And we installed it the next day; it think it took us 3 hours or so [we had already taken out and put back in enough times already to know each step practically by heart!] We had those same carbs, too. My buddy grouses on and on about what a pain they were to sync up, but as I recall I did that for him, like most of the things that got done, because I was the "real" mechanic...
Don't think we ported the heads, though, dangit. That would have been nice. Hardly anybody thought to do that yet back in the 80s, at least in our social circle.
My buddy bought the fancy clutch for the thing when we installed that new tranny, so I don't know the specs on that, but it was grabby and excellent and never wore out again after that point, so it was something good.
He regrets selling it now, but he has Porches in both of his garages, so he can shut his yap!
Heh. That's the first time I've ever heard a 914 referred to as 'classy'. But I guess these days it does apply.
Back when I got that car, most people thought of it as a trashy POS - especially "real Porsche" snobs. But, then I'd go and pass them on the twisty roads and show them what a well-balanced car (and a good driver) can do.
Did that. My favorite is the road up and down Mt. Baldy. Drove all over CA in that damn car. And Oregon. Highway 1 all the way from LA to Leggett and then up 101. Could literally pass motorcycles around tight turns.
I've had my doors blown off by some of the ricers running around the Santa Monica mountains. Lived in Ventura County, but close enough to Malibu to see a bunch of big ass mansions.
No matter how good of a driver, a Ford Fusion is not as nimble as others.
California bumpers. I actually liked having them. The car was so small people wouldn't see it backing up. Those bumpers saved me a lot of headache. And I didn't mind the look. Everyone has their own thing.
Those things, I dunno. They weren’t hard, you could squeeze them a bit. They weren’t rubber. You could buff them up with Armor All, till they sparkled. Bumperettes, I guess. I put a Rayco kit on my 914 which got rid of the bumperettes. I wasn’t a fan of those things.
I had a 914 ‘Bumblebee’ in 1984. I bought it for racing. I was still in high school; I worked delivering pizzas, as a lane attendant at a bowling alley, a video tape rental store clerk, and I cut lawns.
It was like a go cart in handling, but with power. Great little racer.
A tree fell on it. The top of a pine tree broke off and destroyed it, in my driveway.
A new base Corolla is superior in every way. But I get it. My first car was a 1988 Mustang GT 5 speed. A Chevy Equinox 4 cylinder could wax it in a stoplight race but it's too sterile. The old cars had soul, they had theater. A Tesla is superior in almost every way too but it's like a microwave. It's an appliance. Would you rather have a microwaved turkey in 15 min or would you rather have a smoked turkey that took 12 hours? EV's should be in their own category in motorsports. Yes, the Tesla wins. Now let's get back to racing.

I think the 914 was the first factory car what could corner at over 1g without modifications. Are there cars now - unmodified - which can do that (with exception for the supercars)? Can a new base Corolla corner at over 1g? I honestly don't know - been out of touch with the car markets for some time.
Maybe not the BASE Corolla but the GR can. A 3 cylinder with 300HP. That's impressive. I don't care who you are. And today out of the blue, literally all of the car youtubers I watch dropped a video about the GR Corolla. Ugly as fuck but its got some performance chops. I would still rather have a Focus RS.
The 914/6 was a great car. Porsche should have kept going with those. The 916 was truly awesome.
I had a chance to drive a 914 what had a 911sc 3.0L engine wedged in it. Now THAT was a car. Also got to ride in a 914 what a guy put a 327 in. Way fast, but I couldn't get over how he mutilated the car.
The popular V8 swap was an aluminum V8 from a Buick a 215 I believe. Had a guy that had stuffed a small block chevy V8 in his , he was running a local european speed shop and had heard about my 2.5L. He sent out word he wanted to challenge me to a race. I showed up at his place on a Satuday, and he was running his mouth among his gaggle so I said sure, I pick xxx road which had some 90 degree hair-pin turns, very curvy two lane. His face fell, he wanted to quarter mile . I told him in front of his clients/admirers that he had ruined his car, I would cream him on a saloom and if I wanted to blow him away in the quarter I would borrow my BIL 427 corvette.

I always meant to get one of my own, but they were so cheap for so long that I kept putting it off. They're not cheap now.
