Despite what they say either way, Elvis didn't really think about race. He grew up surrounded by niggers so it was always sort of ubiquitous to him. I believe the movie is based on a book called Careless Love: The Unmaking of Elvis Presley, which details the entire time since he came back from the army until his death and it spends a lot of time on Colonel Parker.
