Inflamable fumes all around the shop.... a hair dryer doesn't have a sealed motor so the sparks from the motor brushes ignited what I'm guessing are alcohol fumes from hair products.

Alcohol fumes, grease particles, powders in the air, basically anything aerosolized. In a non-ventilated environment, density will built up to a critical point and any spark will produce an explosion event like this.

And not just hair dryers, lots of hand tools spark as they start up. There's special tools, training, and procedures for messing about in large fuel containers.

Want to avoid this at home? Ventilate.

Hair dryers often also have a heating element. Which isn't like supposed to spark but could very easily.

Anyways, the spark is kind of beside the point. The problem is they're in a room full of flammable gas.
