I mentioned to someone the other day that anything "smart" or "connected" means you don't control it. He said I was a conspiracy theorist. Fucking idiot.
They tell you exactly what you are signing up for, and that's why I have always told them to go fuck themselves. I also don't sign up for the random fuck-you variable cost energy plan because I assume I will get fucked. This isn't Texas where it's like demand based. It's some magic calculation where they punish you for doing the dishes and the laundry at the same time.
Idiots desperately want the latest convenience item....whether it spies on their every move, records their every word, or flips them the bird when they want it to do something... means nothing. At least most of these people understand that convenience is the big fat worm on the sharp hook, to make fools open wide. IoT is not just BigBro's wetdream, but also the prelude to IoB. Baby steps to the slaughterhouse for unwary sheeple.
I used to work at a place that had an energy-limiting device installed on the central air conditioner unit outside. On some days no matter how low you set the thermostat it wouldn't even come on - you'd have to get into the condenser unit wiring to bypass it. Probably would get you in trouble with the electric company too. This was in an industrial park though, not residential.
I can't say for sure but bypassing these maybe more involved than you think, and something tells me the people that get these things don't even know how thermostats or the components in thermostats work. Also worth noting that most of those old mercury filled twist thermostats were for heat only, don't recall ever seeing one that was both heat/cool. But you could always switch it out to a modern non-smart thermostat - if they didn't put another component in the system elsewhere to prevent easy swaps like that...

How they do that normally is that they set up a second meter just for the air conditioner, or at least that's how they used to do it before these new technologically superior thermostats came along. Now it is being done with that.

Exactly. Itza majic box dat makes da room warm or cold!. But yeah, we teach Black History Month and gender identity.........but not science, mechanics or electrical engineering. Soooo progressive!
Mercury thermostats contain bimetal coils that contract and expand with room temperature. When the coil contracts or expands, it activates the mercury switch, which opens or closes a circuit to make the furnace, heat pump, or air conditioner turn on or off. A mercury thermostat may contain one or more switches, depending on how many heating and cooling systems it activates.

just connect the wires you need for ac and your furnace blower.
