Energy Company Shuts Down Access to Home Thermostats During 90 Degree Heat Wave in Denver

Now you know why the government and Big Tech were pushing smart meters.

Residents in Colorado were surprised this week when they were unable to adjust the smart meters in their own home.

The government shut down access to their home thermostat in order to save on energy during the current heat wave.

It’s for your own good.

My power company was pushing these smart meters hard, offering discounts and rebates. I ignored them all. Low and behold they installed a smart meter without my permission and acted like it was a gift to me!

I hired an electrician to wire my house with a transfer switch. It’s up to code and the city permit is filed. I have a generator that can power my entire house. I bought a zombiebox so I can run my generator without my neighbors hearing it. I’m ready for the rolling blackouts.

That’s very interesting. I look into it.

My local hardware store is having a huge sale on mig welders. Something about their inventory being over whelmed now that the boats are finally being unloaded on the coast of california.

I’m all in. I can move both my wife’s SUV and my truck out of our garage. I’ve been collecting scrap metal to experiment with. My local community college has a night welding class but it’s been canceled due to this Covid nonsense

yeah my electric company was also promoting this crap but we said no. we have nuke plants for that shit to happen here and even then the FPL wants to go "green" with solar panels and windmills and shit

It’s not the smart meter that’s the problem. It’s the smart thermostat.

[ - ] Teefinyomouf 1 point 2.7 yearsSep 1, 2022 17:18:46 ago (+1/-0)

They also have smart water heaters, smart clothes dryers, and smart stoves. Basically every high draw appliance. Our electric company asked us to go on a program where these devices could be turned off by them in order to save $15/month. Lol no thanks. So I pay full price and they only retain the option to shut off everything at once.

I hadn’t heard of all those other appliances, but I’m assume yeah they do. I don’t need any of that shit.

what is a zombie box?

[ - ] Thatguy 0 points 2.7 yearsSep 1, 2022 20:06:41 ago (+0/-0)

You’re going to love this. I love it.

I’ve got it sitting in my back yard it houses my 11,000 watt generator, my neighbors don’t know.

smart meters and remote-access thermostats are not the same thing. if you install an externally-controlled thermostat into your house you're an idiot.

[ - ] knightwarrior41 [op] 2 points 2.7 yearsSep 1, 2022 14:00:34 ago (+2/-0)

yeah i dont have any of my appliances connected to the web with the exception of my computer and tablet

[ - ] totes_magotes 2 points 2.7 yearsSep 1, 2022 18:07:54 ago (+2/-0)

Smart meters and smart thermostats are two completely different things. Anyone who can't see this is a retard.

[ - ] lord_nougat 2 points 2.7 yearsSep 1, 2022 14:05:55 ago (+2/-0)

I am glad we kept our dumb old unconnected thermostat!

[ - ] Thatguy 1 point 2.7 yearsSep 1, 2022 14:10:51 ago (+1/-0)

I have a nest thermostat. It’s connected to our home network. I think it’s spying on me. Doh!

[ - ] lord_nougat 1 point 2.7 yearsSep 1, 2022 14:12:30 ago (+1/-0)

My hipster friends installed those too. I'm the luddite tech guy who didn't.

[ - ] Thatguy 0 points 2.7 yearsSep 1, 2022 14:15:12 ago (+0/-0)

I set it to 79 degrees. I wake up sweating and find it’s set to 84 degrees. I suspect my wife. She’s a greenie and hates to waste energy. I’m a modern I consume energy and eat meat.

[ - ] lord_nougat 3 points 2.7 yearsSep 1, 2022 14:24:26 ago (+3/-0)

She needs some percussive maintenance, it sounds like!

[ - ] Thatguy 0 points 2.7 yearsSep 1, 2022 14:27:34 ago (+0/-0)

Not gonna do that. I just gasp and roll it back to 79. She chuckles and waits for me to turn my back. It’ll be 84 before I know it. I just love her.

Maybe should get one of those smart thingies. If they come with a password system that only you have access to.

I’m a desert raised brat. I grew up in the southwest. A scorching day sitting in the shade is my oasis. Dry desert heat is refreshing to me. 79 is my limit. Anything less is to cold.

I love the desert. Even mosquitos hate it. Snakes and scorpions are another story. Always check your boots before putting them on, lol. Snakes don’t bite if you grab them by the tail and throw them hard! Yes, I’ve done that.

Let me clarify here, you will remember that moment as a guttural Grunt as you tossed the snake away. However, all your friends will remember you squeeking like a girl, as you flung the scary snake away. You’ll never live it down. Doh!

Their stings aren’t that bad, somewhere between a bee and a wasp. (I fucking hate wasps, I know they serve a purpose but they sting because they can, fucking wasps.)

I've been saying this for years. "Smart" devices are a bad idea. Smart homes are retarded. And they are doing this with cars too.

[ - ] observation1 1 point 2.7 yearsSep 1, 2022 17:25:31 ago (+1/-0)

This has nothing to do with a smart meter

[ - ] giantprick 0 points 2.7 yearsSep 2, 2022 04:54:37 ago (+0/-0)

When tf did we start having "every emergencies"?

[ - ] 9000timesempty 0 points 2.7 yearsSep 1, 2022 23:34:37 ago (+0/-0)

That sounds very illegal.

[ - ] ruck_feddit 0 points 2.7 yearsSep 1, 2022 19:12:36 ago (+0/-0)

People sign up for this. They get a better rate by letting the power company ease the grid. Then they complain.

The power company didn't just randomly have access to all those appliances.

[ - ] FluffyBunnySlippers 0 points 2.7 yearsSep 1, 2022 18:08:33 ago (+0/-0)

I’m not sure what the problem is. The people affected opted into this, in exchange for a small amount of money . As sad as it seems, if that exchange is worth it to them then great.

The lack of power infrastructure however is another conversation entirely. If led tech hadn't advanced reducing the draw from lights and a/c their lack of planning would be even more starkly shown.

Anything "smart" or "connected" can be controlled by someone besides you.

[ - ] Prairie 0 points 2.7 yearsSep 1, 2022 17:41:43 ago (+0/-0)

People too dumb to turn off their WiFi or reconfigure the thermostat. Or it's the kind that uses its own radio frequencies.

[ - ] Anus_Expander 0 points 2.7 yearsSep 1, 2022 16:42:47 ago (+0/-0)

You can opt out, but still (the article of course didn't mention that part).

[ - ] binrobinrro 0 points 2.7 yearsSep 1, 2022 14:14:39 ago (+0/-0)

You can only use your A/C when it's comfortable outside.
